One of my genealogy guesses turned out to be right. I have corresponded with several persons about the Ray family. Two sons of Alexander Ray and Isabella Scott of Bedford Co., TN -- George Miller Ray, who became Christian Co. assessor, and James M. Ray -- migrated to Batesville, Independence Co., AR and then to Christian Co. after the Civil War. They eventually ended up in Porter Township. In one exchange last year, I speculated that Margaret J., the wife of James M. Ray, may have had the surname of Mayes. I thought she was likely the sister of Elizabeth Mayes and the daughter of James Mayes and Mary Ann "Polly" Sparks. Elizabeth Mayes married Robert Taylor Craig, and their daughter Mary Ann married George M. Ray. The new state death certificate database indicates that Margaret was indeed Margaret Mayes. The information is contained in the death certificate of her son Joseph, who is buried in McConnell Cemetery. James Mayes and Polly Sparks migrated from GA, likely Franklin Co., to Bedford Co. about the time of the War of 1812. Randy McConnell
