There was an article in OzarksWatch quite a few years ago about Allen & "Indian Annie" Young. It was the issue on the African Americans of the Ozarks. A young girl, abandoned by an Indian tribe passing through in 1855 was taken in by the Archibald Alexander Young family, called Annie and, as an adult, married one of the Young families' former slaves about her age, a man who had taken the name Allen Young after emancipation. They lost three children at a young age and raised two daughters, Mary and Annie and three sons Riley/Doc, Lon and Lewis Washington - and have many descendants. The 1870 Christian County Census says that Annie was Cherokee: Young, Alex 45 Farmer TN Mary 31 TN Samuel 13 MO James 6 MO Mary 1 MO Anna 18 Housekeeping Cherokee Nation Allen and Ann married before the 1876 Agricultural Census Young, Allen c m 21 - 45 Porter-064-39 Young, Ann c f 21 - 45 Porter-064-40 The 1880 Christian County Census lists Ann as Indian and says she was born in Indian Territory Indian Annie parents' names were not recorded. I don't know whether Allen knew his parents' names. Your best bet to learn that would be a search of the Christian County Slave Schedules. I don't have either Allen or Ann in the legible tombstones or the mortuary records of Christian County, so I'm unsure when they died or where they are buried. Allen apparently died before 1900.
