    1. Re: [MOCHRIST] Cook & Payne
    2. Wanda, You are too nice. Thank you so much. I am not familiar with John Monroe Cook, Margaret Frances Cofer, etc. As you know there were tons of Pattersons in the area, alot descended from a Samuel Patterson, Tn, who seems to fathered about twenty kids--many of who came to the Ozarks. I am really interested in William M. Cook and Nancy McCoy, etc. I did not realize they were Laura Cooks parents. Can we share information? I suspect you have far more than I. Again, many thanks for responding. Kerry

    1. Re: [MOCHRIST] Regional Links
    2. Jean, I have noticed those regional ties as well. One thing that has intrigued me is why Christian County families moved into Arkansas after the Civil War. I am thinking about the Patterson, Keltner, and Leach familes who went to Carroll County, Arkansas--all had been "unionists" Given Carroll County's location, adjacent to the southern Missouri border(I think south of Stone and Barry Counties), Carroll probably experienced as much turmoil during the War as Christian County had. So what was the draw? Another thing, I am noticing is the role that "regionalism" seemed to play. For very practical reasons, families that knew each other on the east coast and had lived in close proximity often went west together--en masse, serially, or both and settled in the same area. One of late 19th century books by a Springfield, Missouri, settler contains an account describing how the emigrants from various states could be distinquished by their dress, teams pulling their wagons, etc. suggesting a real awareness of "origins and possibly family". In addition, within their new western home, they seem to have interacted primarily with folks who were from their original area. Often this practice was continued well into the twentieth century. 3. Hi Kerry, Those were only a few of the common names that I have seen on the Christian County mailing list, as well as in AR. I was told that a lot of the folks in AR traveled to Springfield in early days to do major business as it was the biggest town close enough to get to. Having had my father's family settled in Izard County, AR from around 1814 on, and having had him live there or in nearby counties all his life, when I began to visit him (I was raised by my mother on the west coast and did not see him from around 3 or 4 until I was 27), I began to realize that Christian County and Izard County were not very far apart! A few years back, I made my first trip to Nixa, MO and fell in love with the area. It's beautiful! I made the trip from Batesville, Independence County, to Nixa in just a few hours. So, I can see that it was probably not too far fetched to think that a number of these people were related. I have a feeling that some of my people moved out of AR to MO, because of Civil War disagreements. I know that history says a lot of people were killed or bushwhacked by some pretty rough people who had very hard feelings on either side in those days. 3. Hi Ellie, Thanks for your reply. I have been in contact with a MCNABB researcher in the past who shared information with me. Perhaps she was the same person that you are referring to. =============================================================== Here's an old message probably from about 1998: Hello there, I was given your names by Vickie who found me on the internet. I am a direct descendant of Catherine. Catherine is my great great grandmother. Her daughter is Nancy Louise McNabb Jackson Hursh my great grandmother. Her daughter is Ethel Hursh my grandmother. I received your information from Vickie on the Upton line. Does anyone have any information on the McNabb family or where Catherine married him? I think his name was William McNabb although my family tree ( done by a great uncle by handwriting it) shows his name as Lou McNabb ( Nancy was named after him and her gravestone says Lou McNabb). My whole family on my grandmother's side is buried in Union Oregon. John Morris Hursh my great grandfather and Nancy's husband came from Harrison AR in 1891 with the Uptons. Josephine Upton was married to Thomas Graham and they are buried next to the Upton vault in Union Cemetery. John Morris Hursh owned several saw mills in the Union vicinity and he was a carpenter by trade. Nancy Louise McNabb Jackson was married prior to marrying Mr. Hursh to a Jackson in AR who died breaking a horse. John Morris Hursh was also married prior to Mahala Brisco who died in 1885 giving birth to twin girls who also died. They are buried in Cozahome AR. <snip> Thanks, Diana Yashar in Salem OR ================================================================== Diana is a direct descendant of Catherine Bledsoe McNabb UPTON. Although my BLEDSOES were in AR, I have a collection of all the census records on them from the time they were in Washington County, TN to Christian County, MO, and nothing on Alabama. It could well be that the BLEDSOES in Alabama were true BLEDSOES, and therefore not a part of my group who in reality were actually BEDSAULS and somehow had a name change after their arrival in Madison County, AR after 1850. Possibly because they were of German descendant and may not have spoken very good English, the census takers may have decided they were to be listed as BLEDSOES and they just accepted it and never made a correction. 2. Ken and others: There could be a connection between the two James Duncans. I do not know much about the family. Regarding the story and photographs, if you cannot find descendents, donating them to the Christian County Library would insure that both descendents and all researchers would have access. Just a suggestion, I work for a State Historical Society so I am biased toward public archives. There are many cemeteries in Christian County in need of maintence and rehabiltation. The Casebolt and Hyde in far eastern Christian County are two of great interest to me. Anyway, a couple of weeks ago there was a flurry of discussion about doing rehabilitation. I do know an sculpture/stone mason in Kansas City who could direct and instruct. Would you be interested in joining forces to work on several cemeteries this coming summer? 3. I'm sorry it's taken me a while to respond, this is a big family. My g-grandmother was Minnie Lee Maples (1881-1957) who was the daughter of William Thomas (1845-1917) and Martha Ann (Stewart) Maples. William was the son of Ephriam W. (1814-1878) and Nancy Ann (Breeden) Maples. Ephriam was the son of Josiah (1782-1855) and Mary Ann (Dyer) Maples. Josiah was the son of Josiah Joseph (1746-1820) and Ruthea (Sweeney) Maples. Josiah Joseph was the son of William (1727-1821) and Prudence (Comstock) Maples. William was the son of Stephen (abt 1695-1775) and Patience (Fargo) Maples. Stephen was the son of Peter Mahpoil (abt 1675) from France. The Cavener's connection is through Winifred (Gold) Cavener who married Timothy Cavener (1824-1864) who was the son of Patrick (1804-1831) and Keziah (Tucker) Cavener and also through Thomas Gold, Winifred's brother who married Mary Jane Cavener (1819-1877) who was Timothy's sister. William Patrick Cavener (1831-1913) married Rachel Minerva Gold who was the sister of Winifred and Thomas. They were siblings of my ggg-grandfather William C. Gold (1827-1910) who was the father of my gg-grandmother Mary Ann Gold who married my gg-grandfather Hugh T. Jackson son of William Andrew and Catherine (Boyd) Jackson. Hugh was the father of William A. Jackson who married Minnie Lee Maples. These families are so interconnected it's funny and a lot confusing. I hope this helps some. 3. Caroline; you are right about the big family. I was hoping the connection was a little closer to home. Oh well I just met another part of the family. My Grandmother was Minnie Selina Ellen Maples and her fathers name was Simon Curtis Maples who married Rhoda Webb and his father's name was Thomas A Maples who second marriage was to Frances Gray Cavaner I am however still looking for where Thomas A. Maples is buried at and where Rhoda and Simon Maples are buried at and of course where Frances Cavener Maples is buried at. That is where I am stuck at. Any help with that would be great. But the reward is I have another name I can add to my Maples family tree. Thanks for responding. I appreciate it Roberta Maple --------------------------------- Yahoo! 3. I'm sorry, they don't look familiar. My connection to the McElhaney's is through my ggg-Aunt Margaret Ann Jackson (1837-1924) daughter of William Andrew and Catherine (Boyd) Jackson. Margaret married Elmer Lazarus McElhaney (1824-1890) in 1858 and had 3 children: Caldeonia (1860-?), Warham (1859-1915) and William (1862-?). Elmer died in Brookline, Greene County, Missouri. Margaret later remarried to a James Trimble and after he died she moved to Oklahoma and lived with her daughter, died there and was buried beside Elmer in the McElhaney cemetery at Brookline. I would like to know more about the children, who did they marry, children?, and when & where did they die? Was Caldeonia in Oklahoma and where? I haven't been able to find Caldeonia after 1880 and would like to know more. I have found some on William and Warham though. I would really appreciate any information anyone is able to provide. 1. McLean Cemetery (with Youngs)
    2. I am looking for anyone interested in helping to restore and preserve the McLean Cemetery located southwest of Ozark. The cemetery fences had been totally breached, first by falling trees then by the local farmers cattle. All the tombstones are laying on the ground. My family (daughters, sons-in-laws and grandchildren) have gotten all the trees sawed down and the ground sprayed last fall. There is still some brush piles to be burned hopefully with in the next week or so. Remaining is the job of buying and rebuilding a cattle proof fence as the cemetery lies in the middle of a farm field. Once the perimeter is secured, the stones need to be reset. (Any idea for volunteer resetting of the stones?) Since I live in Florida, the next big job is to find some local volunteers to keep the brush sprayed so tree do not grow and again cause fence damage. Alexander McLean and his wife Emily Franklin Young McLean are buried here. This cemetery should be of interest to many local natives as it is also the burial site of Archibald Alexander Young 12-Jul-1793 to 20-Oct-1848 and Margaret Eleanor (or Elender) Moore. Other names in the cemetery are T. L. Haworth, Ruthie E Horn, Samuel Tennis - Civil War Vet, Fannie Tennis, Mary Ellen, wife of J M Young, John Yarbrough, Polann Yarbrough, and Lucinda C Blevins.
