Debbie, Which Berry's are you researching, my ggrandfather was Francis P Berry. Wanda
Well, Kerry, actually it's my husband's family that are connected to the Mc Croskeys. Let's see if I can remember. I haven't been doing much research on them. Our 21 year old daughter has been working on this side of the family for almost two years. Last summer we went to the NGS conference in Nashville and then drove up to Washington County, VA and did a couple of days research there. That was interesting to both of us. Matthew Duff McCroskey is the brother to James Madison McCroskey (which is our line). James Madison married Rachel Gibson both are buried in the Patterson Cemetery in Greene County, MO James Madison and Rachel Gibson McCroskey son William Marion (is our line) married Emily Elizabeth Payne. William and Emily Elizabeth Payne daughter, Kathryn Elizabeth (Kate) married Claude Evert Mack which is my husband's family. Claude is my husband's ggrandfather. McCroskey's, Duffs, Paynes, Pattersons, Berrys and a couple of more have kept Lauren quite busy. Lots of miss information floating around out there. It's very hard to track down the correct information when no references or sources are sited or shared. That's one thing we both are sticklers on. We follow lots of leads in our research.(We are Show-Me State natives!!) Anyway, we have lots of interesting conversations and some speculations about things. And most importantly, we have lots of fun on our research trips. Good luck in your trip. Debbie
Thanks Randy, very useful
Debbie, No I am not a relative, got interested in the family as a result of a project I was doing while teaching at Southwest Missouri State University. Really appreciate your offer, very gracious. I expect to be in Missouri in the very near future checking out materials in Columbia, Jeff City and Rolla. I thought that the McCroskeys may have been Presbyterians, principally because John Aven-Mathew's nephew was. So how do you link to the McCroskey's? Am sending the Christian County Library, a copy of Judy Logsdon Pugh's, "From William to William, the Logsdons in America and Related Families, Racine Wisconin, 1982 with the author's permission. Judy is a Patterson and McCrosky descendent. Next time you are at the library check it out. Again thanks for the information. Kerry McGrath

The 1880 census lists William and Lucinda in household 257 in Linden Township of Christian County, Missouri. He is 34. She is 39. Three daughters, Lunda 14, Lona 13 and Ollie 2 are listed with them. All five are listed as being born in Missouri. The 1900 census shows Lucinda in Household 19 of Sparta Township as a widow and pensioner, born June 1841, a mother of three of whom only one was living in 1900. Ollie (Gutherie) Roberts 13 May 1878 - 25 Feb 1968 married 26 Jan 1896 Roscoe Roberts 30 Oct 1873 - 26 Jun 1959. They are buried in Sparta Cemetery. Ollie's obituary lists a son Jess Roberts living in Fresno, California and a daughter, Lona Gailey living in Springfield, Missouri. A Lunda F. Gutherie who married O. P Chrysta 4 Jan 1885 is probably the oldest daughter. I don't know when Lucinda, Lunda or Lona died or where they are buried. If I were researching this family, I would try to find a three or four year old William on the 1850 census or a thirteen or fourteen year old William on the 1860 census. And, I would look for that pension record for which Lucinda was receiving in 1900.
Thomas M Casebolt, Mathew Duff McCroskey, Elijah Sanders, and numbered among the early ministers in the Greene-Christian-Stone-Taney county area during the 1830-1860 period. They married many, identifying themselves as Ministers of God. Schultz in his History of the North Ozarks, may not have gotten the title right, includes Thomas Casebolt in a footnoted list of circuit riders. However, the the Church/denominational affiliations of these men are unclear. Have checked Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, Cumberland Presbyterian records that are available on line and found nothing. Does any one know the church/demoninational affiliations of any of these men? Or, can you point me in the direction of good sources: libraries, archives, etc. Am just about to retire so will be able to travel and do the research, yeah! Thanks in advance for your ideas and suggestions. This list is filled with neat folks and I am proud to be part of it. Kerry, My ancestor, the Rev. James Wright Edwards of Nixa, was a Disciples of Christ minister who was a preacher in Rosedale/Riverdale. However, based on what I've found about the churches in the Nixa area, the churches largely were nondenominational Protestant, even when they nominally were founded by members of a denomination. Simply too few church-going types existed to support a distinct denominational church. Churches often had multiple services on a Sunday with one or more denominations involved in each. Faught Church (later officially Church of Christ/Christian Church in Nixa), Pleasant Grove Church of Christ, Rosedale, Union Hill and others opened their doors to just about anyone who would preach, although many of these churches brought their Church of Christ/Disciples affiliations from Middle Tennessee. The denominations (except in larger towns and cities) didn't seem to take hold until after World War I. Randy
Kerry-- Sounds like an interesting research project you have ahead of yourself. I only know that the McCroskey's were Presbyterian when they were in Washington County VA. So I don't know if that is a clue for you or not. But maybe a starting place. Sorry I didn't know about your research project sooner, I was in Greene/Christian County over the weekend and might have had a minute to check into the Presbyterian history. Are you related to the McCroskey's? Debbie

Anne was also known as "Indian Anne". From what I've been able to put together, Anne was left near a spring by a band of Indians heading west. she was found by Archibald Young when she was 3 yrs old and raised as part of his family. She first shows up on the 1870 census as 18yrs old, "Indian" and listed as "keeping house". Allen Young was a slave of the Young family who was part Indian. I'm guessing he was treated well for him to have taken the Young family name. They had 5 children total I believe and Lewis "Wash" Young was my G-Grandfather. Allen passed on and Anne stayed in the area after all the children had gone on their own. She passed there and is burried in the area. Lewis married Odie Price and they had a son, Leonard "Len" Calvin who married Grace D. Williams in Kansas City where they lived and had my father, Leonard C. Young and my uncle that I'm named for, Robert E. Young. Most of the descendants of the Y! oungs and Prices still live in Springfield, MO. You can find some of this info in the book, "Christian County, It's First Hundred Years". This is on line on the Christian County geneology web site. There is also an article in the magazine "OzarksWatch" issue on African-Americans in the Ozarks. I hope this helps you out. Feel free to contact me at; bobby@worldwindmusic.org . Peace Bobby Young
There was an article in OzarksWatch quite a few years ago about Allen & "Indian Annie" Young. It was the issue on the African Americans of the Ozarks. A young girl, abandoned by an Indian tribe passing through in 1855 was taken in by the Archibald Alexander Young family, called Annie and, as an adult, married one of the Young families' former slaves about her age, a man who had taken the name Allen Young after emancipation. They lost three children at a young age and raised two daughters, Mary and Annie and three sons Riley/Doc, Lon and Lewis Washington - and have many descendants. The 1870 Christian County Census says that Annie was Cherokee: Young, Alex 45 Farmer TN Mary 31 TN Samuel 13 MO James 6 MO Mary 1 MO Anna 18 Housekeeping Cherokee Nation Allen and Ann married before the 1876 Agricultural Census Young, Allen c m 21 - 45 Porter-064-39 Young, Ann c f 21 - 45 Porter-064-40 The 1880 Christian County Census lists Ann as Indian and says she was born in Indian Territory Indian Annie parents' names were not recorded. I don't know whether Allen knew his parents' names. Your best bet to learn that would be a search of the Christian County Slave Schedules. I don't have either Allen or Ann in the legible tombstones or the mortuary records of Christian County, so I'm unsure when they died or where they are buried. Allen apparently died before 1900. I don't know if different browers do something different. On mine, you just click on simple or advanced search; a log-in screen appears and you enter public and public in the id and password fields and click login; then enter whatever search criteria you have - name, etc. and select type of record - marriage or deed or ucc. Then, when the lists come up, put checkmark beside all you want to view in detail and hit enter. Sorry, it doesn't seem to be working right for you.
