Is there anyone who knows about Nicholas Inmans shop. Besides the fact he and Joe Weaver opened one in Ozark then Inman went to the Civil War and came back opening one in Nixa? I'm looking to find out more information about it. Contact me to know the specifics. Thanks.
I'm sorry to be so long in replying. I really do not know much about the Inmans except the sisters Sarah Finley who married James Flow and Martha who married Judge Carroll. Hopefully, you have been able to find out more on the Inman Compendium. Elaine

It occurred to me after I wrote that there seems to be confusion about censuses and tax records, etc. which normally list the person's townships instead of or along with community name. For instance, personal property tax records list only the township name, not the community. If only residents who lived in a community were on records, the vast majority of residents would never appear on any record, since most did not live in a community. Some townships share the name of a community. Many township names have never been used for any town. When a community and a political township share a name, the community's boundaries represent a small portion of the township's territory. Benton, Marion, Porter, Breckenridge, Finley, Linn, Logan, Northview, and Polk are some Christian County Townships which have never been names of towns or post offices or communities in Christian County. The only maps which will list them are maps that show political townships, such as this one showing the 1920 boundaries of townships in Christian County. > http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/maps/missouri/images/christian.gif Jim E Cochran wrote: >Irene, > >There are North Marion and South Marion Townships in Christian County, >I'm not aware of a "Marion" but could be wrong. > >Garrison is in South Marion, Chadwick is in North Marion. > > >Regards, >Jim Cochran >Nixa MO >http://members.tripod.com/anetminder/outonalimb.htm > > >On Thu, 1 May 2003 10:52:22 -0600 Irene Hunt <[email protected]> writes: > > >>Where was Marion located in Christian County, MO? The "genealogy" of the townships is on the transcribed records website. Except for Linden, all townships bearing names of the original township have been divided into either east and west or north and south portions. http://www.rootsweb.com/~moccl/Places/ccmtwphist.htm Parts of current Bruner and Oldfield Townships and all of Garrison, Chadwick, Lead Hill, North Marion and South Marion Townships were carved from Marion Township. I don't find Matthew Shipman listed as a land owner on the 1875 land tax records on the same website [although, yours - one of several Matthew Shipmans - would be a small child at that time]. Matthew Shipman is not listed on GLOBLM website as homesteading or patenting land in Christian County. The 1912 platbook (the only one published before about 30 years ago) lists a M Shipman Section 10 of Twp 27N, Range 20W; an M. L. Shipman in Sections 13 & 14 of Twp 26N, Range 20W and an R. M. Shipman Section 12 of Twp 25N, Range 19W and Section 20 of Twp 26N, Range 19W. Of course, these are land owners. They may or may not have been residents on that land, and many people never owned the land where they lived. Probably the best hint would be to look at landowners who were near the family on the census. Unfortunately, the space on plat books often mean intials were used. With common surnames such as Shipman, it's hard to verify which person is meant. However, the 1910 census shows a Hiram Klinkenbeard living three houses from Mathew & Malinda. The 1912 plat books shows Hiram Clinkenbeard at SW1/4 of SE 1/4 and the SE1/4 of the SW1/4 of section 34 of Twp 26N Range 19 West. That meand Mathew and Malind probably lived within a mile of so of there - likely sections 33, 34 or 35 of 26N19W or sections 2, 3 or 4 of 25N19W. That would mean along Hwy 125 two to four miles south of where Hwy H turns off south of Chadwick, Chadwick Road, Swan Cave Road, Brown's Branch, Guerin Lane or Loving Ridge Road. If people lived a little further apart, it might be within a couple of miles radius of the Clinkenbeard residence. Isaac GARRISON, 1731-1836. Where was his place of birth? Hi All, About 10 days ago, I had the good fortune to view the grave of my GGGG Grandfather Isaac who is buried NW(?) of Ozark on a connecting road to Nixa, I took photos and they all turned out nicely, even tho I was shaking from the chill(I live in Florida). Can anyone tell me without doubt, who were the parents of this Isaac? Within letters, is it considered to be acceptable taste or presumptous to use SAR/DAR if one is one? I is, but not proved via Isaac. R--O, in CO, if U still here, email me privately Jim Adams

Jerry Johnston and Gary L. Tharp have World Connect files listing Hester/Esther (Garrison) Shipman as a daughter of Jonathan & Anna (Booth) Garrison http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/ Abraham & Phoebe (Matthews) Shipman were the only couple I know of with very close personal connections with all three of the men hung May 10, 1889 on the Ozark Square, following the trial of Bald Knobbers in connection with the Green/Edens deaths. As the father of Sarah (Shipman) Walker, Abraham was the father-in-law of David "Bull-Creek Dave" Walker and grandfather of William "Billy" Walker. As the daughter of John Andrew & Sarah (Weatherman) Mathews, Phoebe (Mathews) Sloane was the sister of John A. Mathews as well as the aunt of the fourth condemned man, Wiley Mathews who escaped.
