    1. Re: [MOCHRIST] Reno, Missouri (a.k.a. Reno Hollow)
    2. Bookout
    3. Reno is one of my family names, and they were in that part of MO very early. In fact, my 5th g-grandfather Jonathon Reno (born 30 Sept. 1780 in TN) came to Springfield and was stabbed to death there on 11 Feb. 1838. There's info on his stabbing on the MOGREENE website. His daughter Mary (my 4th g-grandma) married Avenant Hollingsworth, who was a Sheriff of Springfield and Marshal of Greene Co. Not without irony, he was also stabbed to death, just outside Springfield, 24 April 1870. He was almost 70 years old, but he was trying to help a drunken man out of ditch when the guy pulled a knife on him. Anyway, I know that some of Jonathon's sons lived in Christian Co, so possibly Reno, MO is named for this family. Please let me know if you find any info on the Reno family of Reno, MO. Thanks in advance- Meg Bookout in CA StoryWriter1976@aol.com wrote: > I was needing to know if anyone can give me information on Reno, Missouri in > Christian County. 1. Re: [MOCHRIST] LAW IN MISSOURI
    2. Indians could and did live in Christian County during this period. In my family, Alexander Young (who married Mary Susannah Chaffin, daughter of Samuel Chaffin and Elizabeth McConnell) in 1855 found a young Cherokee girl named Anne who apparently had become separated from her family while they were on their way to "the Indian territory" (either Kansas or Oklahoma at that time) near Nixa. (The "Trail of Tears" crossed the Mississippi north of Cape Girardeau and Cherokees took varying routes across Missouri to their new reservations.) She was raised by Alexander and Mary after they were married in 1857 and lived in their home in 1870. I cannot find her in the 1860 census (my earlier notes show she was in that census, shown as born in Tennessee), but she is identified as a Cherokee in the 1870 census and native American in the 1880 census. She married a black man named Al Young, who was known in the community as "Nigger Al" and shown as black on the census records of 1880, although he may have been mulatto. Their children are shown as mulatto in the 1880 census. The family lived on a 40-acre farm south of Battlefield on the northern cusp of Christian Co. The federal census records for this era show "taxed" Indians, who did not live on reservations and lived in the community under state laws. Censuses began showing such Indians in 1850, although not uniformly, and formal instructions on how to include and identify them were issued first in 1860. Indian Anne was the only native American in Christian Co. in 1870. The number of native Americans in Missouri was few -- 20 in 1860, 75 in 1870 and 113 in 1880, which does lend some credence to the belief that state law banned their residency. . Most were in St. Louis City or Jackson County. But early laws of Missouri are not available on the Internet, as far as I know, and your relatives may be referring to the murky legal status of Indians in most states before the passage of the 1887 General Allotment or Dawes Act. Even most Indians in the general population could not vote at that time under the contested terms of an 1884 Supreme Court case, Elk v. Wilkins. Despite early indications to the contrary, U.S. constitutional changes after the Civil War did not make Indians citizens (unlike blacks) unless they had been naturalized under other laws, which were passed as part of separate settlements with individual tribes. The Dawes Act provided for the division of older reservation lands among tribesmen and extension of citizenship to these individuals -- if they renounced their tribal affiliation. The Dawes Act had been designed to convert Indians into land-owning farmers, but succeeded largely in ensuring that, with government assistance, whites took control of most Indian reservation lands, which were declared "surplus.". Several states nevertheless refused to extend voting and other citizenship rights despite the Dawes Act; Congress finally enacted voting-rights legislation for native Americans in 1924. 1. Reno, Missouri (a.k.a. Reno Hollow)
    2. I was needing to know if anyone can give me information on Reno, Missouri in Christian County. I will be doing information search at the library and at the library's website, but I'm looking more for personal information to read what others have heard of its history. I'm not sure of the dates it was established as a town, but I'm guessing sometime in the early 1800s through the mid 1800s. And I know it's not a town anymore and just a road named, Reno Hollow. And it's right off of Hwy 160 going towards Highlandville. So, I know where it is. The personal stories I'm looking for are: * Is it true that the town actually burned? *If the above question is true, has anyone ever heard of ghostly stories being told about the old town? *And, what personal ghost stories has anyone heard about it. I don't really believe in ghost stories because I've never had, or experienced, such encounters, but its just interesting to know others stories. I only know of personal stories from my husband's bestfriend. But I'm wanting to know personal stories, either from what others have heard or what they've experienced. But I'm only looking for topics on Reno, MO (a.k.a. Reno Hollow). Or, if you know of anyone to recommend that I can talk to, please email me. Emails can be sent to me at storywriter1976@aol.com Thanks, Michelle Fitzpatrick

    1. LAW IN MISSOURI
    2. aranch
    3. I have had several discussions with my older realtives about a law in Missouri in the mid 1850's to the mid 1880 hundreds about a law concerning indians in Missouri. These realtives have told me that there was a law stating that NO indians were to be in Missouri in this time line. I have been looking thru old law books and I have not found this to be true. Does anyone know if this law was true and does it cover all of the state or any part of the state? I am curious about this. Thanks for any help in this matter. Carol Albertson a-ranch@ruralnet2.com

    3. Richwood Cemetery is north of Highway 14 or south of CC between Ozark and Nixa, at the intersection of Richwood and Fremont. They're on-line, at least if they have a tombstone. They may not be if there is not records, and there are numerous burials without records: http://www.rootsweb.com/~mochrist/richwood1.htm I know that Asa Colt & Permelia "Arnelia" (Stricker) Shawley's daughter Zella Maurine married Lowell Derry, and that other Shawley women who married Ball, Gregg and Russell men are buried at Richwoods as is a Smith child whose mother was a Stricker. Blanche was born in June 1894 to Isaac (Jr.) & Annie Allen in Missouri, I'm guessing around Webster County. She married Frank Bilyeu on 21 Dec 1913, information taken from the Christian County marriage records. I have the census record for 1920 - MO/Christian/North Galloway/pg 230a - Henry F., age 46; Blanch, age 24; Elene age 2-2/12; and Verland, age 9/12. I couldn't find Henry F. and Blanche Bilyeu on the 1930 census until I was looking for Blanche's other siblings and I found that she had married a J.J. Rhodes (spelled Rhodel on the census). I found them in the 1930 census - MO/ Christian/ Finley/ pg 62b. Along with J. J. and Blanche (age 33 - 1st marriage was @ age 17 - 1913) was Elene Bilyeu, stepdaughter, age 12; Verlin Bilyeu, stepson, age 11; and Kathlene Bilyeu, stepdaughter, age 7. I looked in the Christian county marriage records and found that J. J. Rhodes and Blanche Bilyeu married on 21 Nov 1925. I then looked up and found that Henry F. Bilyeu died on 18 June 1923. That's about all the information I have on Henry F. Bilyeu and Blanche Allen. I'm sorry I don't have any pictures! How are you related to Henry & Blanche? Blanche's father, Isaac Allen and my great grandfather William L. Allen were brothers. Let me know if you want anything else on the Allen side of the family, because I have information on her parents and grandparents and all of her siblings and families. I hope what little information I've shared with you has helped. Looking forward to hearing from you again. Glenda Ebert
