    3. Hi Barb, Thank you for the inquiry; my great grandfather was Peter Booth SMITH, MD b: 1844 Cedar Springs, d: 12 Sep 1915 Augusta, Butler Co., KS. His wife was Mary Ellen ESLINGER of Washington Co., IN. I descend from one of his sons, Ira Samuel SMITH who removed to southern Oregon in 1900. Peter's father was Elder Obediah SMITH, who was an early Baptist preacher in the area and a moving force behind the development of a strong regional conference of Baptist churches. He was also a strong Unionist who gave short shrift to Missouri's southern sympathizers, so, he was assassinated 18 Apr 1863 by Quantrill and his raiders at his farmhouse near Cedar Springs. Peter, his father Obediah and grandfather Andrew are all mentioned on one of Goodspeed Press's puff pieces on Peter of 1880 or so. Our immigrant ancestor came to New Jersey Colony in 1677 from England.
