A few years ago, we had the opportunity to travel from Washington State to the Cedar County Library at Stockton. With precious little time, we researched what we could, and made fast notes on the rest, hoping to someday return to follow-up on our work. Among the things we made note of was a library index of entries in something called "stray books", apparently put together by the county clerk of Greene Co MO. There were two names of interest: John COX and William COX, both referred to as "1833-1842, Book 1, Page 80." I have no further description of this data source.
