Posted on: Cedar Co., Mo Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Mo/Cedar/799 Surname: Marshall, Snodgrass ------------------------- The Benjamin Marshall Cemetery which is located in Cedar County near the Polk County line lies immediately north of Ralph Redman's property approximately 5 miles north west of Fair Play, MO. It is presently being restored by descendants of Jim Marshall (father of Lucille Lavina Marshall Bean-our Grandmother), grandson of Benjamin Alfriend Marshall and Nancy Nance Marshall (from Henry County, VA). Jim Marshall was the son of Peyton Samuel Marshall (son of Benjamin and Nancy Marshall)and Rhoda P. Akard Marshall. Benjamin Alfriend Marshall (died 1880), his wife Nancy Nance Marshall (died 1865), Peyton Samuel Marshall (died 1883) (who all immigranted to Cedar County in the 1840s), his wife Rhoda P. Akard (died 1911 & was from Fair Play when she married Peyton Samuel Marshall...Peyton Samuel Marshall was the surveyor for Cedar County) are all buried in this cemetery. Rhoda P. Akard Marshall was the last to be buried in this family cemetery.(1911) Apparently the cemetery was well cared for up to @ 1970, when the person caring for it passed away, and the cemetery fell into an abyss and has not seen care for 30 years, until October 21, 2000, when a group of my cousins, their children and their spouses literally went in with machetes, rakes, chain saws and cleared the land. The land on which the cemetery sits is now owned by Charlie and Vicki Simmons. But now that the land is cleared, the tombstones can be seen from the road that runs by the property of Ralph Redman. The original homestead site of Benjamin and Nancy Marshall is located less than 2000 feet northwest of the cemetery. There are many Snodgrasses interned there. The stones are still in relatively good shape although few are in an upright postition, caused from tree uprootings that undermined the soil, and cows upsetting stones from years ago. The continuing restoration will take care of that problem. The cemetery is now completely fenced-in, therefore preventing further distruction from cattle.
