Smith, a wealthy stockman, disappeared from his home in Cedar County and has never been heard of since by his wife. He has long been given up by members of his family for dead. Whether he is living or not, he is officially dead. Mary G. Smith, his wife, has just received notice from the commissioner of pensions at Washington, D.C., that she has been allowed a widow's pension under the law which provides for the granting of pension to wives, and after sever years absence on the part of the husband and father. Smith was familiarly known to his friends as "Yankee Bill." He dealt extensively in livestock and was a large shipper to St. Louis markets. One day in 1885, he left home, telling his wife that he was going to a neighbors and would return by dark. He has never been heard of since, although relatives and friends kept up a search for him for years. [My how times have changed!!] Watch your post card business. Someone is getting into trouble every day. One post office has sent in over 400 objectionable cards during the past few months that were adjudged unfit to be sent through the mails. Some of these cards were obscene and indecent; some have a picture of a lobster on the back with these works: "You lobster, why don't you write?" The post office has held that this is a reflection on the character of the party addressed, and that many people would take offense at being called a lobster.... Advertising Dr. Prige's cream baking powder (made from grapes) Cresco Corset, cannot break at the waist. Best on earth, try one. Lots of good things at WILLSIE'S General Store, Cash for Eggs.
