    3. I am very sorry to tell everyone that the city went through with tearing down the old Jail building, that's stood since 1888, I was told months ago that a rain would bring it down, well, it rained, it snowed, it was covered by an ice storm, and the kicker it survived the tornado that wiped out the entire downtown section. It took everything God threw at it and still stood. It was dismantled piece by piece never once did it fall. The Historical Society tried all we could think of and could not convince the city it was worth saving........... They promised to save the rocks for us for a time, however if we can't get a building and use them, the city gets them. I am without words to tell you all how sad this makes me, we found papers among the rubble, we found where prisoners had scratched messages, names in the cement wall. I put a picture of the shame here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~mocchs/index.htm Have a look. Kay A government big enough to supply everything you need is big enough to take everything you have ..... 3. Dan, I think the first time I met you was in that old building. We tried but the city had it's mind made up and were not going to change, Why does the political process have to be so crooked. I was in touch with FEMA, SEMA and the Preservation Society, everything was go but the "city" would not budge. I just hate being lied to. The fault and cover up was close to being out in the open.......... kay > -----Original Message----- > From: mocedar-bounces@rootsweb.com > [mailto:mocedar-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Dan Honeycutt > Sent: Friday, March 23, 2007 8:59 PM > To: mocedar@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [MOCEDAR] Old Jail is gone > > Shameful. 3. Kay, I'm very sorry to hear about the old Jail building. My mother's family is all from Cedar County, near Caplinger Mills ~ Mann, Maslen, Austin, Fields & Reeder. I have to say, as president of the Lone Jack Historical Society, I can certainly sympathize the Cedar County Historical Society. We have a Civil War battlefield in the middle of our town, Lone Jack, Missouri, and the City is doing everything they can to develope it, with the exception of 3 acres. The Historical Society has been blocked in every attempt we've made to save it. I will add, on the good side of all of this, the City turned over the 3 acre Battlefield, Soldier's Cemetery and Museum, which was set aside in 1963 with the help of President Harry S. Truman, to the Historical Society in July 2006, but it took years of being a pain in their backsides to accomplish that much. They were going to close the doors but we finally convinced them to let us manage it and keep it open. Stand firm, the squeaky wheel will eventually gets some grease!! And if all else fails, volunteer to chair the Historic Preservation Commission and process the necessary paperwork with the state to become a Certified Local Government, it's amazing what you can do with the State Historic Preservation Office behind you, if you get my drift!!
