The doctor told his wife to go on to safety, that he would stay with Thomas until he died. As they were leav ing she looked back and the house was burning so he must have died shortly after she left. His wife paid outlaws $50 to lead them to Texas. Some one told her that her gold would not be any good and that the should buy confederate money. They almost starved after they got to Texas. She settled in Grayson County near Bells. this is in north Texas near the Oklahoma border. Hope this helps you some.
