I think this is a WONDERFUL research tool! Many thanks to the state of Missouri for making this available. My question is: What does it take to get other states to take on projects like this?? Oklahoma is my home state and it'd help to just have online access to an index! Thanks Missouri! Cindy, Cheyenne, Oklahoma Researching the Families of Jonathan MOORE and Louvisa/Levisa TURPIN
I found that if I searched the county I wanted and did not put in a name, I found the name I wanted, but if I put the name on the search it did not find some of my names.that way you might find the name spelled another way. Wadene Bennett
I found that if I looked for the name without putting the county in I found it but if I put the county in I didn't. I looked with name and year and had success. Okay, here is the answer I received from the archives. I told Gerald I would pass along his reply. "It has been a busy couple of days trying to keep up with the death certificate database. Because of the number of people trying to search the database we have had to make modifications to the performance of the simple search engine. The search engine is now only searching exact matches of names. My first suggestion is to enter in less information. Just try last name or last name and county. My second suggestion would be to try the advanced search found at http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/advanced.asp This search engine provides a means to search part of a name so you may be able to find the names that are possibly misspelled. Finally, as with any project, there are going to be some errors. We will continue to edit the database and will continue to add in records that were not found in the original index." So, just keep on trying. Kay
I'm having the same problems, one thing I'm thinking is that compliance was not great in the beginning. I am going to ask the archivist who was in charge of this project and see what he can tell me. Will let you all know if I find out anything. The index is complete for 1910 to 1955, as soon as the records for 1956 are released they will be added, etc. The images so far (this is ongoing) are from 1910 to 1920. I've had both excellent, and horrible, luck - I've ordered 10 death certs, copied 4, and can't find 2. (Actually, I've only ordered 5 - waiting for their return to send in the next 5.) Not surprisingly, I found some of the 14 strictly by luck, due to numerous errors: My maternal G-g'mother was listed under Mrs. William B. DANIELS. Her name should have been Artie Susan (MANIS) DANIEL. Notice the addition of the "S" to the end of DANIEL. Hers is one of the four I copied an actual image of. Her husband and all in-laws, which I've also ordered, are without the "S"; According to the index, my maternal G-g'pa Wm B. DANIEL died in Jasper Co. My records had the right date, but wrong Co - Dade; As for the other side of my maternal family, I found that G-g'pa William Hiram SEWARD, Jr.was listed as Hiram SEWARD, with no mention of the Jr, or his actual given name, William; Paternal G-G'fa Adolphus Fernando REYNOLDS had the spelling of Adophus ... missing the "L"; My other paternal G-g'parents were named Moses M. and Mary (POLLARD) ROWLAND. His name was correct, but hers was spelled ROLAND, missing the "W". (Two more of the images I had copied.) I found the best way to search, if a name didn't come up initially with the correct info, was to go to the advanced search, type in only the LAST NAME and mark the "contains" button (I leave off the "S" at the end of those names that have it, and drop the last few letters of the name if it could be spelled a different way; eg, instead of MANIS, just put MAN ... this way it also picks up MANES, MANNESS, MANESS, etc.) I also use all the different spellings it could be, if only using two letters of the surname would cause excess amounts to show (such as "RO" for ROLAND/ROWLAND - that could pick up several other names - ROGERS, ROTHSCHILD, etc.) When you use the first name - even first initial, it limits your search, as that might not be the name they're using (such as Hiram for William, or Mrs. Wm B instead of Artie Susan.) I leave the year and month blank ... and use "search all" for counties, if I can't find a name in the county I think it should be in. You don't really know whether the one you're searching for died in the county where they lived; an accident could have happened when they were visiting another county, or while in the hospital in a different county. That's what happened with the two of mine that died in Jasper Co, instead of Dade. (They both died in the hospital in Joplin.) If there are lots of people in the surname being searched, I start with the counties it might likely be in, such as surrounding counties, or those the family has history in. If not found in those, then use the "search all" ... I'm also ordering siblings death certs, as it depends on who gave the info, as to how much family info is given. One might actually show the mothers' maiden name, while the other one doesn't (that one shows her married name.) Kay, thanks so much for providing us with this info ... I'm really anxious to get my maternal G'mo's back, so we can see what they show as the actual cause of death. Of the ones I have images of, we've found both asthma and heart problems, that tie into some of our current situations. If you already have a certificate try looking by the year. The advanced search worked better for me. The regular search kept telling me no one died in Cedar county. :-) Verna Williams <vmw916@comcast.net> wrote: Why can't I get into the death index. I have also had some great success (not to mention fun!) searching the site. Try using the "Advanced Search" feature.. It helps quite a bit with all those misspellings. Thank you Kay!
