Excerpts taken from February 1907 Issues of the Cedar County Republican COMMUNITY ITEMS IVY Feb. 7: Health is good in this part at present, except some Lagrippe. Feb. 28: Tom Church and Finis Ewing have been breaking some mules to work. MASTERS Feb. 7: What is the matter? We don't hear any talk of ever building a schoolhouse. Probably we have had too much talk now, and not enough work. MT. ENON Feb. &: Dennis Shipman has sold his farm where the blind man, Mr. Conger, lives. It is known as the Uncle Sammy Simrell place, and consideration of $500. BOGGY SPRINGS Feb. 14: Mr. A. Shellhorn sold to Mr. Nance 12 head of hogs at 6-1/2 cents per pound. SAND HILL Feb. 14: August, how do you like to ride in that new hack of John Gannaway's? [The following was not under any of the community items.] Twenty-two years ago, Seth B. Smith, a wealthy stockman, disappeared from his home in Cedar County and has never been heard of since by his wife. He has long been given up by members of his family for dead. Whether he is living or not, he is officially dead. Mary G. Smith, his wife, has just received notice from the commissioner of pensions at Washington, D.C., that she has been allowed a widow's pension under the law which provides for the granting of pension to wives, and after sever years absence on the part of the husband and father. Smith was familiarly known to his friends as "Yankee Bill." He dealt extensively in livestock and was a large shipper to St. Louis markets. One day in 1885, he left home, telling his wife that he was going to a neighbors and would return by dark. He has never been heard of since, although relatives and friends kept up a search for him for years. [My how times have changed!!] Watch your post card business. Someone is getting into trouble every day. One post office has sent in over 400 objectionable cards during the past few months that were adjudged unfit to be sent through the mails. Some of these cards were obscene and indecent; some have a picture of a lobster on the back with these works: "You lobster, why don't you write?" The post office has held that this is a reflection on the character of the party addressed, and that many people would take offense at being called a lobster.... There is a some question if her name is Eliza Robinson. Some family records show it is and others make a doubt. They lived in Cedar County in 1880 with Children. Their oldest Child was born in 1874 so probably married sometime early 1870's. John's family shows top be in Cedar Co in 1870 but John was not with them. Prior to Cedar Co they lived in Pettis. If anyone out there has Marriage records available and can help me with this I would appreciate any help.
Hi Everyone, I have been working on this darn thing for days and I think it's finally working. I tried to give up a couple of times but, kept going back and changing the code here and there. I have my fingers crossed. It is a new submission form for adding obituaries to the Cedar Co. web site. Everyone can enter information using the form, click "Submit" and the obituary will be automatically uploaded to the Cedar Co. "New Obituaries" page. Hope everyone will take advantage of this and if you do happen to have a problem, let me know. Kay The link is from the main page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~mocedar/index.htm
Kay, are there any newspapers from around 1870/71? I am still looking for Uncle "Alvis?" Martin or any Martin who died "of getting overheated in his fields) . I have audited every available microfilm to no avail. She was the granddaughter of a young woman relative of mine named Elethear whose mother died nine days after her daughter's birth and whose father died of Civil War wounds about ten years later. Icie was born 26 Dec 1897 in Pleasant View, Cedar Co., MO of Jasper Allen VAUGHN's first marriage, to Elizabeth 'Betty Jo' NEELY, of a well-known local family. 'Betty Jo' died 05 Sep 1900 in El Dorado Springs, and Jasper remarried about 1907 to Lena A. HACKLEMAN of another well-known local family. 'Betty Jo' was the eldest of ten siblings born of the marriage of Charles Daniel NEELY and Elethear Bridgen SMITH. Elethear, coincidentally, died in the Spring of the same year as her daughter 'Betty Jo', who died 05 Sep 1900. Perhaps they, like many, are buried in Hackleman Cemetery, which I'm told is off 39, south of Cedar Springs'.
