    1. Re: [MOCEDAR] MOCEDAR Digest, Vol 2, Issue 28
    2. Hello: I would love to have more information on the murder of Thomas J. Phipps. I know that William C. Cook and Thomas P. Moore were accused of the murder and that is all I know. I am trying to determine if William C. Cook is the same William C. Cook that is a member of my family. Thank you. 3. Cindy, Would you be able to send me a scan of the articles on this trial? I am descended from this Phipps family and did not know the story. He would have been a second cousin many times removed. If you cannot send a scan, contact me off list and I would like to arrange providing the cost of photocopy and mailing. 2. Kay, were you'all able to go inside and retrieve the museum artifacts that were on display? What about the old newspapers that were stored upstairs? I took some photo's of the inside of the jail when my cousin and I visited in November 2000. My ggreat-grandfather Thomas P Moore spent some time in that jail in 1891 as he was accused of being an accomplice in the murder of Thomas J. Phipps - Thomas P. Moore was acquitted. We were able to find the court records of the trial at the courthouse but we found the accounting of the entire trial printed in the Cedar County Republican April 1891 - and made copies. I can just imagine my ggreat-granfather scratching his name on the concrete. The jail would have been fairly new at that time. I am so sad the city tore it down. I do greatly appreciate all that you and the historical society did to try to save it. 3. Kay, I'm very sorry to hear about the old Jail building. My mother's family is all from Cedar County, near Caplinger Mills ~ Mann, Maslen, Austin, Fields & Reeder. I have to say, as president of the Lone Jack Historical Society, I can certainly sympathize the Cedar County Historical Society. We have a Civil War battlefield in the middle of our town, Lone Jack, Missouri, and the City is doing everything they can to develope it, with the exception of 3 acres. The Historical Society has been blocked in every attempt we've made to save it. I will add, on the good side of all of this, the City turned over the 3 acre Battlefield, Soldier's Cemetery and Museum, which was set aside in 1963 with the help of President Harry S. Truman, to the Historical Society in July 2006, but it took years of being a pain in their backsides to accomplish that much. They were going to close the doors but we finally convinced them to let us manage it and keep it open. Stand firm, the squeaky wheel will eventually gets some grease!! And if all else fails, volunteer to chair the Historic Preservation Commission and process the necessary paperwork with the state to become a Certified Local Government, it's amazing what you can do with the State Historic Preservation Office behind you, if you get my drift!!
