Author: RDDLS Surnames: Hubbard Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.missouri.counties.cedar/1826/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Some time back, on a website I can no longer find, I saw an old picture of a big white farmhouse in Cedar County, MO, that the owner, a Hubbard, had established as a refuge for the widows and wives of Union soldiers, who were no longer safe on their farms with their men away fighting. Does anyone have any information about the house, or the website? We're going to visit there and I'd like to look it up and take photos. Also very interested in which Hubbard owned the farm. I've seen no connection anywhere in my family with the name 'BOOTH', or it would have leapt out at me, as the name does have a sensational 1860s connection. It is intriguing... 3. Hi Barb, Thank you for the inquiry; my great grandfather was Peter Booth SMITH, MD b: 1844 Cedar Springs, d: 12 Sep 1915 Augusta, Butler Co., KS. His wife was Mary Ellen ESLINGER of Washington Co., IN. I descend from one of his sons, Ira Samuel SMITH who removed to southern Oregon in 1900. Peter's father was Elder Obediah SMITH, who was an early Baptist preacher in the area and a moving force behind the development of a strong regional conference of Baptist churches. He was also a strong Unionist who gave short shrift to Missouri's southern sympathizers, so, he was assassinated 18 Apr 1863 by Quantrill and his raiders at his farmhouse near Cedar Springs.
