    3. Dianne, I received your email with the Hartley family chart and I really appreciate you sending it. I have a puzzle that perhaps you or Mike Gilliland or someone else can solve for me. I keep seeing references that claim that Thomas Bentley Hopkins was the son of Solomon and Mary Hartley Hopkins. I haven't seen anyone site a source for this claim though. I have a problem, however, with my great-great-grandfather Thomas Bentley Hopkins being the child of Mary Hartley Hopkins. I have seen the 1850 Census for Polk County listing a Thomas B Hopkins as a child in the Solomon Hopkins household. I have also seen the 1850 Census for Cedar County listing a Thomas B Hopkins in the household with Mary Kennedy Hopkins (widow of Hugh S Hopkins) along with his brother Hugh and sister (whose name escapes me at the moment). [NOTE: Both boys named Thomas B Hopkins are the same age -- 10 years old.] The 1860 Census for Polk Co has Mary Hartley Hopkins, widow, without a son Thomas B Hopkins in the household. The 1860 Census for Cedar County has Mary Hopkins now married to Allen Surratt. In this household are Mary and her two sons Thomas and Hugh. The daughter had married by this time. So whose son is Thomas B. Hopkins? I have always wondered if he was possibly a nephew (or other relative) of Solomon Hopkins who happened to be visiting in Polk County on the day the Censustaker came along. The fact that Thomas Bentley Hopkins married three Simrell women in Cedar County and the Simrell land adjoined the Surratt land in Cedar County, seems to me to lend weight to the fact that he lived in Cedar County instead of Polk County where Mary Hartley Hopkins lived. What do you think? 3. Hi Frank, Well, I do have a Thomas Benton Hopkins (b. 15 May 1841, d. 1904). He is the son of Solomon Hopkins (b. 13 Mar 1813, d. 20 Sep 1853) and Mary Hartley (b. 9 Oct 1813, d. 8 Aug 1896). The dates are a little off but we might be talking about the same person. Speaking of this I am trying to document some information and I do not know how much some of you who have this line will have. It has always been talked about in our family that William Hopkins (b. 1735) married Jane Bolling of the Bolling family that hails from England and has the US Air Force Base in Washington DC named after them. The question is that if any one has information from Orange Co. North Caroline that might shed some light on the early part of our family. William's father is James Hopkins (d. 1758 or 59 and hailed from Wales) and it is said that William had three children. Andrew (b. 1761) James Bolling Hopkins (b. 17 June 1765, d. 1849) John B Hopkins (b. 1770) James Bolling Hopkins married Peggy Woods (d. 1793 or 94). In 1781 he enlisted and served as a Private under Captain Parrish, Major Humphrey and Colonel Thomas Farmer in the NC Regiment. James married Elizabeth Billingsley around 1795 and had 8 children by this marriage. Anyway, I guess that I need to find a North Carolina list to put some of this information out to see if I can get some bites. If anyone has any sources for information I would appreciate it. Thanks all. Michael on 7/25/2001 8:00 PM, Frank Finck at [email protected] wrote: > > Mike. This wouldn't be Thomas Benton > Hopkins,b:1848,d:1920? >

    3. Well, it appears that I have been able to subscribe under my new email. Always seems to be a bit daunting a task....even thought I work in the computer field every day as an IT person the List Serves serves are sometimes a little awkward. Anyway, I am in the process of scanning and putting names with the faces of photos that I have. Many are from the family lines of Hopkins, Simrell, Bryson, Clark and others. As soon as am able to get some up I will put them on my personal website and anyone is free to download them. I will include some pertinent information such as Birth and Death dates, place of birth and so one. (Small disclaimer) Don't worry I won't be putting up any photos that I have been asked to not put on the web. I don't want to cause any trouble with families. I will make sure that the appropriate permissions have been given before doing so. Hopefully some of you will find this useful. After it is up and should you want a higher quality scan please feel free to ask. Thanks, Michael

    3. Hi Nancy, I would love to share information with you. I just checked my records and did not have Mary Matilda's husband and of course the rest of that family line. I am slowly becoming the individual that is keeping all of the family history and genealogy and I have found that the person that was taking care of it before tended to stop after a woman of the Hopkins family married. I am one who likes to have as much information as I can. I would be happy to share any other information with you. All of our records are still on paper. I recently purchased a computer program so that I can generate Gedcom files and make it easier for some to share. This program also allows me to include photos of individuals and I am just beginning to put names with the photos. In fact, Last night I was able to finally read some writing on the back of a photo that is of Anjeline Simrell who was one of Thomas' wives. If I remember correctly, this year will be the 65th year of the Hopkins-Simrell family reunion. Next year we will have a printout of the entire family line...at least what I have in my records. As far as we can tell the Hopkins family goes back to James Hopkins who died in Orange Co., North Carolina in 1758 or 59 but we have not been able to find any information on this or where he came from. The family has always stated the he came from Wales. Also, we are trying to document other children of James. Currently we only know of a William Hopkins and it is believed that there are others with names of Andrew, James and John. I have lots of information to share it will take a little bit as it is all on paper and not in a more accessible format. 2. I am researching the Stiner/Steiner family in Cedar County. My ggrandfather Jacob Stiner filed an application for Civil War pension in Stockton showing residence as Cane Hill. One of his witnesses was a neighbor W.W. Pyle. I can only assume that your Pyles married Jacobs granddaughters. I can place two of his sons, Lloyd Sharpless Steiner married Mary Elizabeth Brutzman in Cedar Co abt 1882 and Norman A. Steiner married Columbia Redford in Cedar Co. in 1884. They would seem likely candidates to be the parents of the Steiner sisters that married Pyles. I will keep digging, and let me know what you come up with. Another neighbor was a Mr. Fanning.
