In transcribing an 1869 mortgage, I've run across a term that I hope somebody on this list can clarify for me. The mortage is from H.C. WITHERS and wife to Theodore STANLEY, "Prest of the County of Cass and State of Missouri." "Prest." can be an abbreviation for "President." but what does it mean in this context? Since the Cass County Savings Bank at Pleasant Hill seems to be involved, was STANLEY the President of the bank, chartered by Cass County, so that he could have been described somehow as an officer of the County? In the same document Luke WILLIAMS, the County Recorder, also signs as "agent" of STANLEY. I'd appreciate any help on this problem. Thanks. Mary C.
