    1. Re: [MOCASS] James Madison MORTON-Eliza Ann BROADSTREET
    2. I am sure by now you have given up hope of hearing from me. Never fear. I will be 74 soon and I'm getting slower. I checked the obit for "Mrs." Morton and tried to track down her family. I know now that she isn't your Eliza Ann. I finally found her husband's name along with her son's and grandson's. Her name was Elizabeth Jane. I went back today and spent some time checking other records and hope I have found some things of interest to you. I found James M.'s Probate records that have his will and many other papers including the bills of sale. I don't know exactly what you are looking for or how you are connected but I made several copies and will mail them to you if you will send me your address. I have $7 worth of copies. I didn't copy all the papers in the Probate packet. There may be 50 or so of them and many are receipts. The Will names William W. Morton and Luranna Tilley as heirs and names her children. All of her children are Tilleys and Luranna died when she was 37 so all six must have been young. She also lost a child named James M. Eliza is mentioned in the Will and other copies. Luranna's father-in-law, Abraham Tilley was in the Civil War and I copied his obit. I found a marriage certificate for William Morton but the bride's name is not the same that is on land records with him. Of course, it's possible that he married more than once. I didn't copy the land records but I can do that if you think you want them. They just show that James, Eliza, William and Sarah sold land. It is interesting that someone, probably the Dr., made many visits to Eliza and some to James. One bill with many entries is for "bandage leg." I feel like I've had a successful day and hope you agree and will let me know soon if you want the copies and where to send them. Jo

    3. How can I help the Missouri Post-1910 Death Records Project achieve its goal of providing online access to this collection? Transcribing records from your home The Missouri State Archives sponsors a successful "e-volunteer" program in which volunteers, working from their home, index and transcribe historical records. With the help of “e-volunteers,” the Missouri State Archives plans to post online a database index of nearly two million death certificates from 1910 to 1954. This index will then be linked to a digital image of the death certificate.   Volunteers to this project will be provided photocopies of the death certificate index, transcription instructions, and a spreadsheet template to transcribe these records. A sample of the index to be transcribed is available for viewing in Adobe PDF format.  The index is arranged by year and alphabetically by surname within the year. Because of the size of the project the index has been divided into approximately 50 page sections for transcription.  If you are interested in participating in the Missouri Death Certificate Project, please send the following information to archvol@sos.mo.gov. • Your name • Postal address for mailing the photocopies of the index • Email address • Information on the spreadsheet application (MS Excel, MS Works, etc.) you will use.   Please note that the creation of this electronic index is the first phase of this project and required before the Missouri State Archives can begin the digitization of the death certificates. A date has not been set yet for the release of the database online.

    3. Tom, Since you have already checked the funeral home, did you get a copy of the Record of Funeral from them? Go over that record, since it should show exactly WHERE she passed away. If she passed away someplace else, the record should show which funeral home first handled her, since the funeral home in Litchfield would be the funeral home that handled her buriel. I have been trying for some time to get people to check funeral records for loved ones who have passed, since most funeral home keep records going back to the early 1900s, if they have been in business that long. Usually, if a funeral home is bought out, the records will stay with the local funeral home. The funeral homes USUALLY give the information to the papers for obituaries to be printed, so the funeral record would be a very good source docuiment. I've been getting funeral records since about 1994, and it has helped me tremendously! In some records, even the cause of death is included, along with the exact place in the cemetery where they are buried. Also, survivors are listed, sometimes with addresses and phone numbers, as well as pall bearers. Funeral home listing from all over the world can be found at www.funeralnet.com. Good luck with your search! ciao! 1. records in jeopardy
    2. Lanita Sconce Smith
    3. The early Arkansas records stored at the Powhatan Courthouse [in the vaults in Lawrence Co., AR] have been moved while the courthouse/museum is being renovated. Apparently, there has been a recommendation not to move them back - but to move them to an unprotected area. Read about it here: http://www.jonesborosun.com/archives.asp Type "Powhatan" [without quotes] into the search box. When there, you can also voice your comments to the newspaper. Just find the appropriate place to click. We are very concerned about this because this old church that they want to use now, has no way of protecting the records from fire, theft, climate control, or any 2 or 4 legged vagrants. These documents are a large number of early ones where pioneer families from Arkansas AND MISSOURI are found. The majority of early parts of Missouri counties are also effected. Lawrence Co., AR is the mother of all counties in the area, and documents include ones that Lewis and Clark had signed, have been protected by the vaults, until lately. The future is in question as to how protected they will be. It really is a step backward in the preservation of our history. Please write to the Arkansas State Department here: Division of State Parks, Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism One Capitol Mall Little Rock, Arkansas 72201 1-888-287-2757 (V/TT) info@arkansasstateparks.com We are passing this alert on to genealogists across the nation, but many are not voicing their concern because they have no one who were in the area. We urge all genealogists everywhere to help us take up this fight. Let them see that they have opened a can of worms that will not go away until they do the right thing!! If this major county in the state does this, who is to say that others won't follow?? 2. A great-great aunt (Aura Wilton Young) lived in Belton, Missouri during the late 50s (from postmark on a letter I have in my possession). She is buried in Litchfield, Montgomery County, Illinois (where she was born). We cannot locate a death certficate, but the local funeral home records show that she died in 1966 at the Cottage Nursing Home. There was apparently no such place in Montgomery County, Illinois. Does anyone know if there was a nursing home by that name in the Belton, Missouri area. Thanks for your input. Tom D.

    3. Hi all, I've been searching for Henry F. and Martha A. (Humphries) Reeser for some time. They were married 22 May 1877 in Jackson Co, MO. They were living in Cass Co. in 1880. I found them later down in McDonld Co, MO with children, Dellie/Ellen, John B. and Lillie/Lillian. They were there in 1900 and 1910, but gone in 1920. If anyone has information on this family I'd like to exchange information. I have information of Martha's parents and siblings. Thelma of Colorado

    2. These tax records are housed at the Margaret Wade Archives located in the Cass County Public Library and managed by the Cass County Historical Society. To my knowledge, none of these books have ever been publicly printed so you would either need to make a personal visit or send a request for information to the Historical Society.
