Abernathy who served in the 3rd Missouri State Militia Cavalry, companies K, A, & B from July 22, 1863 to July 13, 1865. So according to this record the SM stands for State Militia. The document contains probably approximately 117 pages of affidavits and other papers concerning the pension filing. One of the affidavits is from a William Slaughter with the date of November 17, 1905.
