Maggi, I don't know if this is the same William Garner or not. Do you have the parents for your William Sr? I believe my William Garner to have Jeremiah Garner & maybe Mary Blaylock for parents. They were from Lincoln County, NC. Cathy
Bill, Thank you kindly for the little bits of information. I really don't have a whole lot collected on William Garner yet, don't know what kind of businessman he was. Yes, the number of land transactions involving these guys are amazing!! I didn't realize William Garner had moved to Illinois. I don't have it in my notes yet, but I thought I had a will or probate record for him in Cape County. I have been working mostly from his son (James H Garner) on down the line. I have five children listed for William Garner at this time. If anyone else has anymore info, I would love share. Please let me know if I am incorrect. William Garner (1781-1849) m Elizabeth Hill (1780 -aft 1850) 1. Jane Garner (abt 1804 - ?) m Alexander Starret in 1824 2. John Garner (abt 1806 - ?) m Nancy Walker in 1839 3. James Hill Garner (1810 -1874 ) m Malinda/Belinda King (1820 -1856) in 1837 m Catherine Kinson in 1863 4. Catherine Garner (1811 - ?) m William Trickey/Frickey in 1833 5. Mary Garner (abt 1815 - aft 1864) m Henry Walker in 1833

My best guess, without checking court records, is that they were in partnership. I don't think one operated as the other's agent. As you probably know, Garner was a local businessman before moving to Illinois. Cross was a large landowner and farmer, as well as the owner of a large number of slaves. ----Bill Eddleman >Date: Mon, 17 May 2004 17:19:33 EDT >From: Mozarkhick@aol.com >To: MOCAPEGI-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: John Cross & William Garner (1781-1849) > >Anyone descend from John Cross? Anyone descend from John Cross? I descend from William Garner. It appears that Garner & Cross bought & sold a LOT of land in Cape County. Or was Garner an agent for Cross, or what was the situation? If anyone knows anything about them, I would love to hear from you. Thanks!! Cathy Hill
