    1. [MOCapeGirardeau ] Re: MOTHERSHEAD Deed
    2. Thanks for the reply Bill. I think you're right about the possibilities...and the most likely scenario is probably #2, that the deed was recorded much later and we just haven't found it yet. Mainly because if the deed was never recorded I can't figure out how L. Houck would have known about it. Also, even if the seller was not ECKHART, I can't find any transaction yet that has both Charles and Clifton MOTHERSHEAD involved at the same time. So looks like I've got some more searching to do! Thanks again, Jo Ann -- There are some possibilities: 1. The deed(s) was never recorded. 2. The deed was not recorded until much later, and has not yet been abstracted. 3. Houck got it wrong, and the seller was someone else. (Not completely unprecedented, although Houck was VERY good for accuracy.) I note that Daniel STOUT sold one of the MOTHERSHEADs a lot, which was apparently lost after MOTHERSHEAD and STOUT were sued later. I also found where Henry ECKHART bought Lot No. 16 in Jackson, which later appears as owned by the estate of Daniel STEINBECK and others. Don't ask how they got it! (Apparently other unrecorded deeds, recorded years later, or I haven't located them yet.) Sometimes no deeds appear if the two parties were relatives, or if the lot was inherited. ----Bill Eddleman

    1. [MOCapeGirardeau ] Another Store owner question
    2. stephanie miller
    3. The recent store owner questions prompts me to ask another one; I am researching the LEE and CHEEK families of Cape Girardeau County from 1800 on. I have a note that a JAMES LEE was a store owner in the 1820's, I also have a note that he may have gone to Claiborne Parish, Louisiana. And there I find a mention of a James Lee owning a store in the late 1820's. Can anyone add to this? Was there a migration of families from Cape Gir. Co to Claiborne Parish, as I found mention of another family that moved. Thank you for any help. 3. Interested in your findings on the Eckhart of VA who owned the store the Mothersheads purchased. Shall check my files for the Mothershead surname as I've been collecting records for years on the ECKERTS & STEINBECKS who lived in Cape Girardeau in early 1800s. And yes, I've seen the Eckhart/Eckert name mention several times in various book and I believe his name was Henry.
