I don't know if this may be what you have reference to. According to a display at the St. Joseph Museum (Wyatt-Tootle Mansion) it occured about 3 miles east of St. Joseph. The wreck was the result of the burning of the railroad bridge and about 16 civilians were killed. The curator told me that this puts it near Easton. She also said that there are very few newspaper articles from 1861 in the St. Joseph area exists and those that did were one sided based on their alliance. She knows of no articles that survived on this wreck. I will continue to look into this as I am researching the Village of Agency and collecting as much information as I can find. I also live in Agency and am connected with the Agency Ford Museum.
