What was previously the No. 2 Asylum became St. Joseph State Hospital and about 8 years ago moved across the street and became No.West Missouri Psychiatric Rehab Center. The medical records were transferred with the facility but I am not sure how far back they kept the records. I worked at the facility for 30+ years a social worker before retiring about 5 years ago. I do know they were putting some records on microfilm. There were some fascinating stories in these records and I do hope for the benefit of family members that they have kept these records. There is a small cemetery on the grounds of the old hospital where patients were buried when no family could be found to provide a burial elsewhere. While researching at the No West Mo. Genealogy Center, I noticed that they had a census for the state hospital about 1900. I am not sure if they have more than one year or not. The telephone number for the hospital is 816-387-2300 and the address is North West Mo. Psychiatric Rehab. Center, 3400 Frederick Blvd. St. Joseph, Mo. 64506. You would ask for medical records.
