David Joss was born in Switzerland 1825, left there in 1848, and lived and farmed in Washington Township, Buchanan County, Missouri from 1850 past 1910. Most of the information below is from census records and is subject to inaccuracy, especially in the transcription of names. In the 1910 census he was 85 years old living with his daughter Louisa and son-in-law; in the 1920 census he does not appear. He was baptized in Münsingen, Canton Bern, Switzerland, 3 April 1825, fourth son and sixth child of Christian Joss and Elsbeth Laderach. (Obviously this didn't come from the census!) Hes the younger brother of my great-great grandfather Christian Joss, who emigrated a year or so later than he did and ended up settling in Ohio and then Illinois. As far as I know they are the only members of their immediate family to emigrate. We have documented several generations of their ancestors in Canton Bern (http://wc.rootsweb.com/~hendersonscholes). In the early 1850s David married Barbara _____ and they had at least three children: 1. Louisa Joss b 1852-1853, married _____ Lundy (?) and had: Andrew H. Lundy b 1880 Illinois, alive and unmarried 1910, not found 1920 two other children, one died before 1910 and one after Louisa married second c 1887 Gottlieb Kunzi/Kunsi and had: Rosa Kunzi b 1888, alive and unmarried 1910 2. William Joss b 1854, married Mary _____ and had: three children prob b 1880-1888, one died before 1910 and two after Ernest A. Joss b 1888 alive and unmarried 1910, not found 1920 Lillie M. Joss b 1903 alive and unmarried 1920 3. Rosanna Joss b 1856, no further information In 1910-1920 Williams and Louisas families were living on Bell Road. Any and all additional information about any of these people -- or suggestions about useful avenues of local research -- would be most welcome. Mary's last name was not Reens - this was a mistake made when someone transcribed a land deed from 1827. After Thomas died, Mary married Adam Kerns, and it looked like Reens on the deed.
