Shannon: We have the same Peter Crites, but he is not a part of the Hamon Critz line in VA. Hamon's son Peter was a RW veteran and applied for pension in Rockingham (doing this from memory) Co., NC which is just across the line from Patrick Co., VA where Hamon lived.. Those records verify that that is not our family. My husband and I lived most of our married life in Danville, Va, have visited and researched family in Va. No known connection could be found and the Peter Critz is not ours. Someone has recently attached our family to the Phillip Critz in West VA, but that's a fabrication too. This is one of the reasons I'm working so hard to put my collection of documents in order and prove as much as I can before time runs out on me. Our family appears in Lincoln Co., NC mid 1760s and signed Creutz in German (both in NC and MO), which is probably from the French side of the Rhine River. I haven't any proof but after 57 years of research, this seems to be a logical conclusion. Where do you live? I will be in MO April 24th-May 7th. I will be teaching a workshop at the Library in Dexter on April 30th 10:00 - 3:00. I will be at the Regional Library in Jackson on the 27th most of the day and will be attending the genealogical Society meeting there that night. I will be at the Marble Hill Library on Wednesday the 28th and probably on Wed. of the next week before returning home to TN. LeAnn Kelly of Bloomfield and I will be at the Regional Library in Jackson again on Monday the 3rd strictly to work on Crites and that may carry over until the next day. Depends on how many Crites people want to join us and help with searching the records or sharing their files.. I will have my records with me as I am in the process of tying up loose ends and preparing to scan my files on CDs for preservation and then decide best how to dispose of the originals (57 yars of research) to best benefit the public. At 77 years of age it's time to get my house in order. I descend from Jacob, son of Peter, Sr but I have yet to establish a full list of children for him and his son, Peter Jr. My line is proven, Daniel's line is proven as another son. Davault's (brother of Peter, Sr.) family is fairly well organized and his son, Peter's family is documented. The Jacob and Nancy Sheradin Cryts in Stoddard is Peter's son. He did not have a son Peter, but the Peter that was there and moved on seems to belong to his brother Abraham. or else could be a son of the above Peter, Jr. There is no paperwork on Abraham other than census in MO but he appears to have had a large family. He owned land in NC, but so far I've not come up with any proof documents in MO. I never really searched for them though as I had proof on my family and never really bothered with the rest to any extent. There's still a lot of work to be done to sort out the duplication of names. The name change to Crites appears in the family as they move into MO 1800-1815 The family members migrated a few at a time over the years until all of them seem to be in MO except for an illegitimate child b. 1797 (of one of the Peter Crites) that remained behind in NC. He eventually took the Critz name about the time he married. However the tax records of 1815 -1823 is enough to bogle the mind. Combine that with the duplication of names on the 1830-50 census and it is utter chaos. I've spent several weeks sorting through my files and trying to put what I have in order in preparation for my trip. Thanks for writing. Hope you and others will join us to help sort this out or at least offer supporting documentation to prove lineage that I haven;t yet uncovered.. Maybe your Peter Crites? He had a daughter, Elizabeth Critz, b c1788, location unknown. My wife's line goes through one of his sons, Peter Critz, Jr., b 1774 North Carolina. About 1800, moved from NC to Cape Girardeau, MO, with Col Frederick Bollinger. In 1802, he helped build Bollinger Mill in Burfordsville, MO. In 1825, he moved to Stoddard Co., MO. If so, father of Peter Critz, Sr., was Hamon Critz. Believe Critz was an anglicization of Kreuz. Hamon was b c1720, Germany. Naturalized in the colonies in 1753. In 1767 served as a justice of the peace in Pittsylvania Co, VA. From 1767-1770, he was a captain in the VA militia, eventually attaining the rank of colonel. Regarding your other message, I don't have a Fanny listed under Peter Critz, Sr. However, Hamon Critz had at least three other children. George Critz, b c1750 VA, d 1805. James Critz, no details known. Hamon Critz, b 1760 VA, d 1828 . . . given your details, I'd look here. Unfortunately, I'm a bit cavalier about the family history and probably don't annotate my sources correctly. I also haven't done a lot of digging recently--hit some signficant dead ends, had kids, moved a couple of times. However, my wife's aunt, Jane Foeste (included in the distro), is the one who supplied me the info above. Thanks to Donna for hooking us up.
