Lorena, I too am sorry I could not make the May 3rd Crites session. I had to have an injection in my back and was not able to travel. How did the day go? I would really like to know if any conclusions or assumptions were made about Daniel Crites being a part of Abraham Crites b about 1772's family. Thanks so much, Joyce Brown
Vivian: I'm home again. So sorry you weren't well enough to attend the meeting on the 30th. Would have loved to have talked to you more. Do hope you are feeling better. Hope you have enjoyed ONE WISE MAN. Keeep in touch. GENEALOGICAL WORKSHOPS SCHEDULED FOR SE MO The Stoddard County Genealogical Society, in cooperation with the Keller Library, 402 W. Grant, Dexter, MO 63841 (PH 573-624-3764) will be holding a genealogical workshop on Friday, April 30th from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM with Lorena Shell Eaker of Church Hill, TN as presenter. Participants in this workshop are asked to bring their ancestor charts and/or family group sheets and (copies only) of Bible records and other legal documents for a period of show and tell after the program presentation. Access to the copy machine is provided for those wanting to share. Mrs Eaker is a native of Bollinger County and a direct descendant of many of the early settlers of SE MO. She is a veteran of 57 years in genealogical research. The hobby she shared with her late husband until his death in 1990. She is the renowned author of The Shoe Cobbler's Kin, A Genealogy of The Peter Eaker, Sr. Family, Vol. I 1976, Vol. II 1985; and her most recent book "One Wise Man, A Genealogy of Frederick Wise of Lincoln County, NC and His Descendants, 2002"; all of which pertain to thousands of area families with many ancestral sketches of families with whom they intermarried.. Her book, "German Speaking People West of the Catawba River In NC 175 0-1800 (With Some Émigrés Participation In The Early Settlement of Southeast Missouri), 1994" is a emigrational History of more than 600 immigrant families to the Catawba River Area and has reached wide acclaim as a resource for tracing their children or grandchildren's migrations out of that area. Many of these proceeded to settle Southeast MO and then Northern AR. These four books provide a wealth of genealogical history for SE Missourians within their nearly 4000 pages and 176,000 names. These can be found in most area libraries She also has workshops scheduled for April 28th and May 5th at The Bollinger County Library in Marble Hill; on afternoon of April 27th at the Regional Library in Jackson; and another there on Monday, May 3rd for anyone researching the CRITES family. This particular family is in desperate need of researchers to put their heads together and iron out the many problems. Her many friends and fellow researchers are invited to join her for these sessions. She is currently "putting her house in order" by preparing her vast collection of files and finding a means to share them
Shannon: We have the same Peter Crites, but he is not a part of the Hamon Critz line in VA. Hamon's son Peter was a RW veteran and applied for pension in Rockingham (doing this from memory) Co., NC which is just across the line from Patrick Co., VA where Hamon lived.. Those records verify that that is not our family. My husband and I lived most of our married life in Danville, Va, have visited and researched family in Va. No known connection could be found and the Peter Critz is not ours. Someone has recently attached our family to the Phillip Critz in West VA, but that's a fabrication too. This is one of the reasons I'm working so hard to put my collection of documents in order and prove as much as I can before time runs out on me. Our family appears in Lincoln Co., NC mid 1760s and signed Creutz in German (both in NC and MO), which is probably from the French side of the Rhine River. I haven't any proof but after 57 years of research, this seems to be a logical conclusion. Where do you live? I will be in MO April 24th-May 7th. I will be teaching a workshop at the Library in Dexter on April 30th 10:00 - 3:00. I will be at the Regional Library in Jackson on the 27th most of the day and will be attending the genealogical Society meeting there that night. I will be at the Marble Hill Library on Wednesday the 28th and probably on Wed. of the next week before returning home to TN. LeAnn Kelly of Bloomfield and I will be at the Regional Library in Jackson again on Monday the 3rd strictly to work on Crites and that may carry over until the next day. Depends on how many Crites people want to join us and help with searching the records or sharing their files.. I will have my records with me as I am in the process of tying up loose ends and preparing to scan my files on CDs for preservation and then decide best how to dispose of the originals (57 yars of research) to best benefit the public. At 77 years of age it's time to get my house in order. I descend from Jacob, son of Peter, Sr but I have yet to establish a full list of children for him and his son, Peter Jr. My line is proven, Daniel's line is proven as another son. Davault's (brother of Peter, Sr.) family is fairly well organized and his son, Peter's family is documented. The Jacob and Nancy Sheradin Cryts in Stoddard is Peter's son. He did not have a son Peter, but the Peter that was there and moved on seems to belong to his brother Abraham. or else could be a son of the above Peter, Jr. There is no paperwork on Abraham other than census in MO but he appears to have had a large family. He owned land in NC, but so far I've not come up with any proof documents in MO. I never really searched for them though as I had proof on my family and never really bothered with the rest to any extent. There's still a lot of work to be done to sort out the duplication of names. The name change to Crites appears in the family as they move into MO 1800-1815 The family members migrated a few at a time over the years until all of them seem to be in MO except for an illegitimate child b. 1797 (of one of the Peter Crites) that remained behind in NC. He eventually took the Critz name about the time he married. However the tax records of 1815 -1823 is enough to bogle the mind. Combine that with the duplication of names on the 1830-50 census and it is utter chaos. I've spent several weeks sorting through my files and trying to put what I have in order in preparation for my trip. Thanks for writing. Hope you and others will join us to help sort this out or at least offer supporting documentation to prove lineage that I haven;t yet uncovered.. Maybe your Peter Crites? He had a daughter, Elizabeth Critz, b c1788, location unknown. My wife's line goes through one of his sons, Peter Critz, Jr., b 1774 North Carolina. About 1800, moved from NC to Cape Girardeau, MO, with Col Frederick Bollinger. In 1802, he helped build Bollinger Mill in Burfordsville, MO. In 1825, he moved to Stoddard Co., MO. If so, father of Peter Critz, Sr., was Hamon Critz. Believe Critz was an anglicization of Kreuz. Hamon was b c1720, Germany. Naturalized in the colonies in 1753. In 1767 served as a justice of the peace in Pittsylvania Co, VA. From 1767-1770, he was a captain in the VA militia, eventually attaining the rank of colonel. Regarding your other message, I don't have a Fanny listed under Peter Critz, Sr. However, Hamon Critz had at least three other children. George Critz, b c1750 VA, d 1805. James Critz, no details known. Hamon Critz, b 1760 VA, d 1828 . . . given your details, I'd look here. Unfortunately, I'm a bit cavalier about the family history and probably don't annotate my sources correctly. I also haven't done a lot of digging recently--hit some signficant dead ends, had kids, moved a couple of times. However, my wife's aunt, Jane Foeste (included in the distro), is the one who supplied me the info above. Thanks to Donna for hooking us up. Hi, On the Wayne County Miss. 1860 census there are several Kinders listed under one household. KINDER Elizabeth 48 Female Mo. Matildae 33 F " Sarah H 18 F " James M 16 M " Franklin 13 M " Anna D 11 F " Francis D 11 M " Philip J. 28 M " WADLOW Mary 4 F " "" Martha 2 F " Phillip A. 1 M " I hope this is of some help. Bev Hanner
I'm desperately trying to follow up on Crites and Kinder information in "German Speaking People". while making an effort to preserve in some fashion my 57 year collection of records. I keep running into questions that need answers. Peter Kinder m.20 Nov 1804 Lincoln Co., NC to Elizabeth Crites, daughter of Peter Crites, Sr. (not son of Davault). Peter Kinder made a will in August 1813 which was probated in Cape Girardeau Co. in Sept 1813. He makes mention that his wife is to inherit everything and to later divide any residue with their children. He does not mention children's names After much searching I find (what I think) is Elizabeth on the 1830 Madison County census at Marquand with 2 sons 15-20 and one son 20-30. Elizabeth is age 40-50 (b. ca 1880 or shortly thereafter.). At this point I lose this family. If anyone out there is working on Kinders and Crites that can identify them and where they moved too, I would appreciate it. This would be one more needle pulled out of the haystack. Thanks much, Lorena

Genealogists, particularly those interested in the use of technology, will meet in St. Louis from 22-24 January 2004 for NGS GENTECH 2004. December 1 is the deadline for the "early bird" registration discount. Since 1993, GENTECH has been the national conference for people interested in GENealogy and TECHnology. In 2002 GENTECH strengthened its infrastructure and expanded its role by becoming a division of the National Genealogical Society. Each year the conference has featured a panel of nationally known speakers who have addressed themselves to every aspect of the use of computer and Internet technology to support genealogical research - to meet the needs of advanced users as well as those just beginning to use technology in their research. This year there will be a special Librarian's Pre-Conference at NGS GENTECH Thursday, January 22, 2004. Details of this special Pre-Conference are at: www.slcl.lib.mo.us/slcl/sc/gentech04/precon-schedule.htm. I'm trying to organize my Crites Family File for posterity! Need clarification on the following: Probate records were filed on 31 Oct 1837 by David Grounds in Cape Girardeau County on the estate of Peter Grounds. He left the following heirs. Margaret Crites Grounds, widow (she was daughter of Davault and Sophia Crites) Children: Margaret Grounds Bollinger, Which Bollinger did she marry? (some sources list her as the wife of Daniel, but with the same heirs as her sister Barbara) Sophia Grounds Yount, wife of Henry Barbara Grounds Bollinger, reputedly wife of Daniel Bollinger, but this is questionable. Elizabeth Grounds Statler, Which Statler did she marry? Polly Grounds Mouser, wife of Isaac Mouser David Grounds (m. Rachel Shell). David died 1840, leaving his wife and daughter Margaret. The above named children are all that appears in the estate records. Looking for proof of these questionable marriages. Any help is appreciated, Lorena
Can anyone tell me the names of any local researchers in Bollinger County that would be available for paid research? I understand there is a map in the courthouse in Marble Hill with early Spanish Land Grants and the names of the settlers on each parcel. I live too far away to be able to see it in person any time soon. Also, could anyone tell me if the Spanish Land Grants were different from patents issued by the BLM? And if so where would I find information on the Spanish Land Grants. I have a letter written in 1980 by an elderly cousin who states the names of several individuals that were issued Spanish Land Grants (as she saw the map in the courthouse in person) and I have been unable to find several of the names in the BLM database. I would appreciate any help possible with these questions! Many thanks!! Diana
