S. A. Gardner, officiating. Mrs. E. J. Kerksiek and Mrs. A. W. Hampy sang "Abide With Me" and "In the Hour of Trial" with Mrs. Ray Johnson as organist. Pallbearers were Arlie Goetz, John Ahrens, Delbert Bormann, Waterston Martin, Raymond Schlesselman and Dr. O. U. Riemenschnitter. Interment was in the Cole Camp Cemetery on Highway 52. Mrs. Rena Alice Spurgeon died in Palmyra, Mo., July 22, 1964. She was born at Dillon's Mill in Franklin County, Virginia, on September 23, 1877, the youngest child of John and Katherine Wray. She came to Missouri with her parents when she was five years old, and spent the rest of her life in and near Cole Camp; until she went to Palmyra in 1961. She was married to Frank Spurgeon in 1896. Mr. Spurgeon operated a jewelry store here for several years and was Cole Camp's first mayor when it received its city charter. He died in 1909. Mrs. Spurgeon is survived by two daughters, Mrs. R. M. Ellis of Palmyra, Mo., and Mrs. A. A. Wahlbrink of St. Louis, Mo., two granddaughters, and seven great grandchildren. Her first child died at birth and a son, Dr. Charles Wray Spurgeon, died in 1951. She was a member of the Methodist Church of Cole Camp and a member of osage Valley Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. In this organization she had the distinction of holding the chair of Ruth for twenty years.
