Here is a copy of his obit. Cass County Democrat--17 Feb. 1916 ELIJAH BUCKNER HAMMONTREE DED Passes Away at the Kansas Home of His Daughter, Mrs. Josie Anderson Elijah Buckner Hammontree, pas 80 years of age, a pioneer resident of harrisonville and Cass County, died a the home of his daughter, Mrs. Josie Anderson, in Ottawa, Kansas, on Wednesday, February 9, 1916. During the afternoon of that day he was engaged in clearing the walks of snow around his daughter's home. About 4 o'clock he felt a pain in his back and went to bed. During the deepening night he sang, in a clear voice, his two favorite hymns, "Shall We Meet Beyond the River" and "Nearer My God to Thee," after which he offered up a prayer. If he had any premonition of approaching death, he did not make it known. He was served with a drink of water near midnight, and the other members of the family believing he was resting comfortably, went to rest. In the morning it was found that Mr. Hammontree's soul had passed into the night, seemingly without having pained its prison place, the body. The remains were shipped to this county and the funeral was held at the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, a short distance east of Lone Tree, Sunday, February 13. The Reverend Jones of Lee's Summit conducted the services. Interment was at the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. Elijah Buckner Hammontree was born September 4. 1835, in Jackson County, Tennessee. The family removed to Cass county in 1837 and settled on what has since been called the Hammontree farm, six miles south of Harrisonville, where the deceased had lived, except during the Civil War and the past few jears of his life. He was united in marriage with Miss Margaret Barnard, November 17, 1854. From this union the following children were born: Mrs. Abbie McCraw of near Adrian, Missouri; Mrs. Anna E. Flook of Delta, Colorado; Mrs. Eva McGill of Salina, Kansas; John F. Hammontree, who lives on the old home place, six miles northeast of Everett; Walter Green Hammontree, who died in infancy, and D.D. Hammontree of Kingsville, Missouri. The date of the death of Mr. Hammontree's first wife is not known to the DEMOCRAT. He was married to Mrs. Martha Barnard on March 23, 1871. One child was born of this union, Edwin F. Hammontree, of Hagerman, New Mexico. The DEMOCRAT was not able to secure the date of the death of the second Mrs. Hammontree. Mr. Hammontree was married again to Mrs. Liza Vannosdale, now deceased. We were unable to learn the date of this marriage. The children from this union were: Wheeler T. Hammontree of near Pleasant Hill, Mrs. Josie Anderson of Ottawa, Kansas, and Mrs. Medana Williams of Kansas City. The deceased served with General Sterling Price during the Civil War. He united with the First Baptist Church in Harrisonville when 16 years of age, and later he transferred his membership to the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, which he assisted in building. Afterwards his membership was changed to the Baptist Church at Archie, then to Harrisonville, and again back to Archie. He resided in Harrisonville fronm 1900 to 1911. Elijah Buckner Hammontree was a God-fearing, Christian man. He was industrious and frugal. He was the father of twelve children, ten of whom are alive. He taught these children habits of thrift and industry, and all of them are citizens of which any community might be proud. _____________________ Card of Thanks We wish to tender this "Card of Thanks" as a feeble token of the appreciation we feel toward friends, neighbors and all who so unstintedly extended their sympathy and assisted us materially in the last rites paid to Elijah Buchner Hammontree, our beloved father.
