She was born at Sedalia on April 6, 1917, a daughter of John E. & Sophia Kurtz. As a girl she attended St. Paul's Lutheran School and the Sedalia Public Schools. She was an active member of the Grace Lutheran Church, involved in LWML, the Braille Ministry, and the church office volunteers. Mrs Gardner's husband's military career took the couple to Kansas City, where she was employed by Employers's Mutual of Wausau until they moved to Bloomfield, New Jersey, in 1949. Various other moves followed...among them to Suffolk, Virginia, in 1961 and, following retirement, to Arlington, Texas, in October 1987, allowing them to be closer to their daughter and her family. She volunteered at local hospitals, the Red Cross, and with various other charitable organizations. She also assisted with the Feed Arlington and Arlington Night Shelter. Mrs. Gardner is survived by her husband of 55 years, Robert P. Gardner; a daughter, Janice Runzheimer of Arlington, Texas; one brother, Leonard Kurtz of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; and three grandchildren. Friends can call after 8 a.m. Monday at the McLaughlin Funeral Chapel. A funeral service will be held in Sedalia, Missouri, at 2 p.m. on Monday, at the funeral chapel with the Rev. Ken Tatkenhorst officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. rwbrauer@iland.net
