May have mistakes Newspaper Clipping January 26, 1940 Mrs. John Steffens, Sr. Katie Steffens, nee Lutjen, passed away suddenly Saturday morning at 9 o'clock at the home of her son Ernest about 5 miles southwest of Cole Camp, Mo., due to heart failure. Catherine Lutjen was born in Germany. When three years old her parents emigrated to America settling near Mt. Hulda, Benton County, Mo. Baptized at an early age she attended the Lutheran Christian day school in Bethlehelm Church, southeast of Cole Camp. There, later, she was confirmed by the Rev. Miessler. In 1871 she united in marriage with Henry Lutjen. Two children came to this union, George Lutjen of Mt. Hulda and Margaret, now Mrs. Herman Meyer, of Mt. Hulda. Her husband taken from her by death in 1878 she was married to Cort Steffens. One daughter was born, Catherine, who passed away in 1884. Then she was united in marriage with John Steffens, March 18, 1885. Four sons were born, William who died in infancy, Henry D. Steffens, of Cole Camp, Mo., John Steffens of Lincoln, Ernest Steffens of Cole Camp, Mo., with whom she made her home until her death. She is survived by one brother, H. H. Lutjen, of Cole Camp, Mo., two sisters, Mrs. Sena Junge of Cole Camp, and Mrs. Maggie Botjger of Walnut, Kansas. Three brothers preceded her in death. She leaves also 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held in the home of Ernest where she passed away on Monday, January 15, the day before her birthday on which she would have attained the age of 89 years. Services were held in Zion Lutheran church, Lincoln, Mo., the Rev. O. L. Bernthal, officiating and preaching two sermons, a German sermon on Ps. 17:15 and an English sermon on Gen. 47:9. The body was laid to rest in Zion Lutheran cemetery. Pallbearers were: William Claus, John Olaf Luetjen, Henry T. Junge and Henry Schnackenberg. Typed as found. Denise Brauer Hoehns rwbrauer@iland.net
