AOL's email system will convert many large emails into zip file attachments, or .txt attachments. And email I get from a couple of relatives with other systems will always show attachments marked "unknown" even though there is nothing there, and if you "download" same and attempt to open them, all you get is a "rubicube" type icon. But it is also possible, as happened recently, for one to have and send out certain types of viruses without knowing it. To be safe, download the attachment to a floppy disc, and check same with a current virus program BEFORE you open it or attempt to.
