Mo Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Mo/Benton/11128 Surname: ------------------------- The poster of a recent response on the Benton Co Query board had unknowingly been infected with a minor type of virus, which is unlikely to damage your computer, but sends out emails to any unread emails you happen to then have. If you have responded to a post on the board within the past week, and do not have a current real-time virus program running, it might be wise to check your system. If you did not email the infected address you have nothing to worry about. I have deleted the address in question until certain it has been cleared. If a virus email was sent to you, it would have had an attachment and message something like: "Please read attachment and reply". You would have to have opened and activated this attachment to get the virus. The virus then does not manifest itself until 5 minutes after your next reboot, at which time you get an on-screen message: "File data corrupt, probably due to bad data transmission or bad disk access." It then creates two files: Hkk32.exe and inetd.exe. You can "Search for Files or Folders" for those, and delete them if found. But it is a good idea to always be prepared, and a recommended free virus scan program, that will automatically fix above if found, can be downloaded at: http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp Since no one else has written since the first messages of concern, probably no one else was affected, and since they said they could not open the attachments, hopefully they were not either.
