May have mistakes Cole Camp Courier November 8, 1962, Pg. 1 Mrs. Ernest Steffens Funeral Rites Mrs. Emma Steffens, wife of Ernest Steffens, passed away at the Bothwell hospital, Sedalia at 8:30 Monday morning, November 5. She entered the hospital on Friday. She had been in failing health for three years. She attained the age of 69 years, 9 months and 3 days. Funeral rites were held at the Zion Lutheran Church, Lincoln at 2 o'colck Wednesday afternoon with the Rev. Ernst H. R. Mueller, officiating. Pallbearers were: Herbert Steffens, Walter Peters, Elmer Meyer, Otto Luetjen, August Schnakenberg and Gottlieb Boettjer. Interment was in the Zion Lutheran cemetery, Lincoln. Mrs. Emma Christine Steffens, nee Mueller, was born at Lincoln, Mo. on February 2, 1893, a daughter of the late John and Christine Gerdts Mueller. She was babtized on February 16, 1893 and confirmed in the Zion Lutheran church on March 24, 1907. On February 19, 1922 she was united in marriage to Mr. Ernest Steffens. Three sons were born to this union. After their marriage the couple moved to a farm five miles south of Cole Camp, where they resided until November 11, 1960 when they moved to Cole Camp. Survivors include her husband of the home in Cole Camp; three sons, Arnold Steffens, Cole Camp, Harold Steffens, Ionia, and Delbert Steffens, Sedalia; five grandchildren, one sister, Carrie, Mrs. John Steffens, Lincoln and three brothers, Edwin Mueller, Arthur Mueller and Albert Mueller all of Lincoln, Mo. One sister preceded her in death. The body was at the Fox Funeral Home in Cole Camp until 12:30 Wednesday afternoon when it was taken to Zion Lutheran Church Lincoln, to lie in state until the time of the funeral. rwbrauer@iland.net

    3. Cole Camp Courier December 31, 1992 Ernest F. Steffens Ernest F. Steffens died at 10:10 a.m. Dec. 28, 1992, at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Cole Camp. He was 98. He was born June 3, 1894 near Cole Camp, son of John and Katherine Luetjen Steffens. He was married Feb. 19, 1922 at Lincoln to Emma Christine Mueller who preceded him in death on Nov. 5, 1962. He had been self-employed as a farmer. He lived on a farm five miles southwest of Cole Camp until Nov. 11, 1960 when he moved into Cole Camp. He moved into Good Samaritan Nursing Home on July 17, 1989. He was babtized on June 10, 1894 at Zion Lutheran Church in Lincoln and confirmed on April 14, 1904 at Mt. Hulda Lutheran Church, Cole Camp. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church at the time of his death. Survivors include three sons: Arnold Steffens of Cole Camp; Harold Steffens of Ionia; and Delbert Steffens of Sedalia. He is also survived by six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, one half-sister, two brothers and one half-brother. Services were to include 7-8 p.m. visitation Wednesday, Dec. 30, and a funeral at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, at Zion Lutheran Church in Lincoln. Rev. David Zirpel will officiate. Pallbearers are Melvin Steffens, Darrel Ehlers, Crag Otto, Jim Steffens, Caryl Froesche, and Earl Meyer. Interment will be at Zion Cemetery under the direction of the Fox Funeral Home of Cole Camp.     3. May have mistakes Cole Camp Courier June 28, 1984, Pg. 4 HERBERT E. STEFFENS Herbert E. Steffens of Lincoln, died at 10:50 p.m. Thursday, June 21, 1984, at Bothwell Hospital, Sedalia. He was born January 19, 1919, in Lincoln, son of John W. and Carrie Mueller Steffens. On September 18, 1941, he married Leona Kreisler, who survives of the home. Mr. Steffens, who was a farmer, had been a resident of Lincoln and Ionia for many years. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Lincoln. Other survivors include his father, John W. Steffens, Cole Camp. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the church with the Rev. Marvin Ulmer oficiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. rwbrauer@iland.net

    3. May have mistakes Cole Camp Courier March 12, 1970, Pg. 9 MRS. CARRIE STEFFENS Mrs. Carrie Steffens of Lincoln died Wednesday afternoon at her home at the age of 82 years. She was born at Lincoln October 22, 1887, daughter of John and Christina Gerdts Mueller. On October 26, 1916, she married John W. Steffens, who survives. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church. Surviving also are a son, Herbert Steffens, Cole Camp, and two brothers, Arthur and Albert Mueller, Lincoln. Preceding her in death were two brothers and two sisters. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Zion Lutheran Church in Lincoln with the Rev. Rolland Nothwehr officiating. Burial was in Zion Lutheran Cemetery. rwbrauer@iland.net

    3. May have mistakes Cole Camp Courier August 13, 1992 John W. Steffens John W. Steffens of Cole Camp, died Sunday afternoon, Aug. 2, 1992 at Bothwell Regional Health Center, Sedalia, at the age of 102. He was born on Nov. 28, 1889 at Cole Camp, the son of John and Katherine Lutjen Steffens. He grew up in Benton County and was married to Carrie Mueller on Oct. 16, 1916. Following their marriage they lived on a farm in Benton County until 1948, when they moved to Lincoln. They had one son, Herbert. John's wife Carrie preceded him in death in 1970. He then moved to Cole Camp. In October, 1991, he became a resident of Margene's Guest Home in Sedalia, where he was living at the time of his death. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Lincoln. He was also preceded by one son, Herbert Steffens, on June 21, 1984, and by one brother, Henry Steffens, on Dec. 4, 1959. John is survived by one daughter-in-law, Leona Steffens of Lincoln; one brother, Ernest Steffens of Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Cole Camp; several nephews and nieces; other relatives and friends. Funeral services for John W. Steffens were at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, at Zion Lutheran Church in Lincoln with the Rev. David Zirpel officiating. Pallbearers were Harold Steffens, Arnold Steffens, Forrest Brockman, Larry Eckhoff, Earl Meyer and Larry Eckhoff. Burial was in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery under the direction of the Davis-Miller Funeral Home of Lincoln. Memorials may be made to the Zion Lutheran Building Fund or "Good News" radio broadcast. MARY STEFFENS Mrs. Mary Sophia Steffens of Cole Camp, died at 2:05 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home here at the age of 91 years, 11 months and 16 days. She had been a patient in the nursing home since November 3, 1968. She was born on a farm near Cole Camp June 16, 1879, daughter of the late Henry and Margaret Jacobsen Meyer. She was married to John Steffens, May 26, 1906. He preceded her in death Feb. 4, 1945. They were the parents of one child who died in infancy. Mrs. Steffens spent her childhood days in the Cole Camp community. She was baptized in infancy on June 28, 1879, at St. John's Lutheran Church and after due instruction in the christian faith was confirmed on April 16, 1893. The family resided on a farm for many years moving to Cole Camp in the year 1944. Survivors include one brother, Norman Meyer of Sedalia, two sisters and two brothers preceded her in death. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Cole Camp, where funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday with the Rev. Walter Moose officiating. A quartet composed of Mrs. Oscar Heimsoth, Mrs. Vern Dean Case, Mrs. Milton Heimsoth and Mrs. Raymond Eckhoff sang, "For Me to Live Is Jesus" with Mrs. L. C. Schnell as organist. Burial was in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Pallbearers were Rufus Harms, Gottlieb Boettjer, Mike Bauer, Marcus Meyer, Herbert Meyer and Fred Steffens.     3. Benton County Guide, Friday, February 9, 1945 JOHN FRED STEFFENS DIES Passed Away Sunday Morning At His Home in Cole Camp. John Frederich Steffens, retired farmer of Cole Camp, died at 7:30 o'clock Sunday morning, February 4, 1945, at his home, having attained the advanced age of 72 years, 3 months and 7 days. For several years he had suffered from a heart ailment which necessitated the giving up of all work. For the past three months he had been in very poor health and his condition gradually grew worse. Last Sunday morning he was preparing to partake of breakfast when he suddenly and quietly passed away. Funeral services were held at 1:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Eickhoff Funeral Home and at 2 o'clock at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cole Camp, the pastor, Rev. H. J. Gerike, officiating. A ladies' quartet sang, "What God Ordained Is Good." Interment was in Trinity Lutheran cemetery. Pallbearers were: Gottlieb Boettjer, Ben Balke, August Balke, John Chehaski, Henry Intelmann Jr. and Rudy Bohling. John Frederich Steffens was born on October 27, 1872 in the Mt. Hulda community the son of Claus H. Steffens and his wife Mary, nee Schroeder. Several weeks later, November 17, his parents brought him to Holy Baptism, through which he was received into the family of God. On April 18, 1886, he was confirmed in Trinity Lutheran Church at Mt. Hulda by the Rev. A. Meyer. He was united in marriage with Mary Meyer on May 24, 1906. One child was born to this union, a stillborn daughter. The deceased spent his childhood years in the home of his parents southeast of Cole Camp. After his marriage he and his wife continued to live on a farm in the Mt. Hulda community until 1919. For seven years thereafter he lived in Cole Camp, and then made his home a short distance west of Cole Camp, where he lived for 19 years. In November he and his wife moved to Cole Camp, but he was not to enjoy his newly purchased home here for long. He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife Mary, one half brother, Henry Steffens, and many other relatives and friends. rwbrauer@iland.net

    3. May have mistakes Benton County Guide, June 17, 1949 William Linstrot Dies Aged Resident Of Cole Camp Passed Away Monday, Funeral Friday Afternoon. William Linstrot, aged 86 years, 8 months and 21 days, passed away at the Woodland hospital in Sedalia shortly after entering the hospital Monday afternoon. Death was attributed to a heart ailment. Funeral services will be held at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Cole Camp at 12:00 noon Friday (today) with the Rev. H. J. Gerike, officiating. The body will then be taken to Appleton City, Mo., where services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church at 3:00 o'clock with the Rev. A. L. Rolhfing, officiating. Burial will be at the Appleton City cemetery. William Linstrot was born September 22, 1862, on a farm 8 miles southeast of Lincoln, a son of the late John Linstrot and his wife, Fendena nee Elkman. He spent his childhood and young manhood in the Lincoln community. He was baptized in infancy by the Rev. Theo. Miesler, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church where he was also confirmed by the Rev. Nething. On September 21, 1889 he united in marriage with Miss Anna Maria Steffens with the Rev. Nething performing the ceremony. The couple moved to a farm near Appleton City, Mo. Four children were born to this union, three of whom died in infancy. In 1937 Mr. Linstrot retired from farming because of failing health. On December 10, 1937 Mrs. Linstrot preceded her husband in death. After her death he made his home with his niece, Mrs. Anna Gernant in Appleton City. In 1946 Mrs. Gernant moved to Cole Camp and Mr. Linstrot spent the summer months there, the winter months were spent in Bartlesville, Okla., with his daughter, Mrs. James M. Cowan. He returned to Cole Camp three weeks ago. Although he had been an invalid since suffering a fall nine years ago his condition was not serious until shortly before his death. He is survived by his daughter, Clara, Mrs. James M. Cowan of Bartlesville, Okla., two grandchildren, one great grandchild, and one sister, Mrs. Mary Wenig of Cole Camp.     3. May have mistakes Benton County Guide May 14, 1948 MRS. CLAUS STEFFENS DIES Aged Lady Passed Away Thursday. Funeral Held Sunday. Mrs. Caroline Grube Steffens, widow of the late Claus Steffens, passed away at her home in Cole Camp at 7:30 o'clock Thursday morning, May 7, following a paralytic stroke suffered about three weeks ago. She had been in critical condition since that time. She attained the age of 81 years, 8 months and 10 days. Funeral services were held at the Eickhoff Funeral Home at 2:00 o'clock Sunday afternoon, May 9. The Rev. Geo. Winton, pastor of the First Methodist Church officiated. Burial was in the Union cemetery near Cole Camp. Pallbearers were G. W. Beyer, John Chehaski, Daley Linville, Walter Grube, Harry Corman and Henry T. Junge. Mrs. Carolina Fredericka Louisa Steffens, nee Grube, was born at Sandfork, Ohio on August 26, 1866, a daughter of the late August Grube and his wife Caroline, nee Roelf. In early infancy she was baptized and on March 28, 1880 confirmed in the Lutheran Church. Her childhood days were spent in Ohio. In 1893 at the age of 24 years she came to Missouri. She united in marriage with Mr. Claus Steffens on November 9, 1893. The couple resided on a farm two miles west of Lincoln for nine years, then moved to a farm near Cole Camp where they resided until 1928 when they moved to Cole Camp. Mr. Steffens preceded her in death on April 9, 1942. She is survived by a daughter, Katie, Mrs. Ora Jacobs and a son, Carl Steffens, both of Canton, Ill.; five grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Mary Payne of Columbus, Ohio; four brothers, August Grube, Lees Summitt, Mo.; Ernest Grube, Columbus, Ohio; Carl and Robert Grube of Patriot, Ohio. Three brothers and three sisters preceded her in death and a grandson lost his life in the South Pacific. rwbrauer@iland.net

May have mistakes Benton County Guide April 17, 1942, Pg. 8 CLAUS STEFFENS FUNERAL HELD SATURDAY Mr. Claus Steffens, aged citizen of Cole Camp, passed away at his home at 5 o'clock Thursday morning, April 9, 1942. Although he had been in failing health for several months his death was sudden and unexpected. He reached the age of 79 years, 5 months and 22 days. Funeral services were held at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Cole Camp at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon, April 11. Rev. C. A. Hughes, pastor of the First Congressional Church had charge of the services. Interment was in the Union cemetery near Cole Camp. A ladies quartet sang "Rock of Ages", "Somewhere the Sun is Shining' and "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder". Pallbearers were: Henry T. Junge, Henry Intelmann, Sr., Emil Roepke, Walter Grube, John Linville and Franklin Tubesing. Claus Steffens, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry was born in Germany on October 17, 1862. In 1873, when he was eleven years old he came to the United States and settled near Cole Camp. On November 9, 1893 he was united in marriage to Miss Louise Grube. To this union were born, a son and a daughter, both residing at Canton, Illinois. He retired from the farm fourteen years ago, when the family moved to Cole Camp. He leaves to mourn his passing, his widow, one son Carl Steffens of Canton, Illinois and a daughter, Mrs. Ora Jacobs also of Canton, and six grandchildren. rwbrauer@iland.net

May have mistakes Benton County Guide Nov. 21, 1941 SISTER DIES IN JEFFERSON CITY, MO Mr. and Mrs. Claus Steffens received word early Monday morning of the death of Mrs. Katie Kieselbach, only sister of Mr. Steffens, who passed away at her home in Jefferson City, Sunday. Funeral services were held in Jefferson City, Tuesday afternoon and burial made at that place. Mrs. Kieselbach will be remembered by many as she formerly resided in Cole Camp. Steffens, 72, who resides on a farm near Cole Camp, was found dead at his home Friday, December 4. Hillard Wilckens, rural letter carrier became suspicious when he noticed Mr. Steffens had not picked up his mail in his box. He notified his brother Ernest Steffens and the two went to the Steffen's home to investigate and found him dead in his bed. From all indications he passed away December 2. Funeral rites were held at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Cole Camp at 1:30 Monday afternoon with the Rev. J. L. Fisher, pastor of the Methodist Church, officiating. Pallbearers were: Elmer Meyer, Harold Steffens, Rudolph Balke, Fred J. L. Grabau, Otto E. Luetjen and Robert Fowler. Interment was made in Cole Camp Memorial cemetery. Henry D. Steffens was born on a farm near Cole Camp on April 17, 1887, a son of John and Katherine Luetjen Steffens. He was baptized in infancy and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He is survived by two brothers, John W. Steffens, Lincoln and Ernest Steffens, Cole Camp; one half sister, Mrs. Maggie Meyer, Cole Camp and one half brother, George Luetjen, Cole Camp. May have mistakes Newspaper Clipping January 26, 1940 Mrs. John Steffens, Sr. Katie Steffens, nee Lutjen, passed away suddenly Saturday morning at 9 o'clock at the home of her son Ernest about 5 miles southwest of Cole Camp, Mo., due to heart failure. Catherine Lutjen was born in Germany. When three years old her parents emigrated to America settling near Mt. Hulda, Benton County, Mo. Baptized at an early age she attended the Lutheran Christian day school in Bethlehelm Church, southeast of Cole Camp. There, later, she was confirmed by the Rev. Miessler. In 1871 she united in marriage with Henry Lutjen. Two children came to this union, George Lutjen of Mt. Hulda and Margaret, now Mrs. Herman Meyer, of Mt. Hulda. Her husband taken from her by death in 1878 she was married to Cort Steffens. One daughter was born, Catherine, who passed away in 1884. Then she was united in marriage with John Steffens, March 18, 1885. Four sons were born, William who died in infancy, Henry D. Steffens, of Cole Camp, Mo., John Steffens of Lincoln, Ernest Steffens of Cole Camp, Mo., with whom she made her home until her death. She is survived by one brother, H. H. Lutjen, of Cole Camp, Mo., two sisters, Mrs. Sena Junge of Cole Camp, and Mrs. Maggie Botjger of Walnut, Kansas. Three brothers preceded her in death. She leaves also 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held in the home of Ernest where she passed away on Monday, January 15, the day before her birthday on which she would have attained the age of 89 years. Services were held in Zion Lutheran church, Lincoln, Mo., the Rev. O. L. Bernthal, officiating and preaching two sermons, a German sermon on Ps. 17:15 and an English sermon on Gen. 47:9. The body was laid to rest in Zion Lutheran cemetery. Pallbearers were: William Claus, John Olaf Luetjen, Henry T. Junge and Henry Schnackenberg. Typed as found. Steffens, 87, of Higginsville, died Sunday, April 18, 1976, at Veteran's Hospital in Kansas City. He was born May 8, 1888, at Cole Camp, a son of Henry and Anna M. Cortes Steffens. The funeral was Wednesday, April 21, at Wiegers Funeral Home, at Higginsville, Rev. Jack L. Daniel conducted the service with music by Miss Elsie Bleckschmidt, organist. Casketbearers included members of American Legion Post 223. Burial was in Higginsville City Cemetery. Friends called Tuesday evening at Wiegers Funeral Home. Mr. Steffens, a farmer, was a member of Dunksburg Christian Church. He had resided in Higginsville for about 35 years.     3. Note: May have mistakes Benton County Guide March 29, 1940, Pg. 8 OBITUARY Anna Meta Cordes Steffens Anna Meta Steffens, nee Cordes, was born January 11, 1854 at Cole Camp, Mo. She was married to Henry Steffens, June 22, 1876, who preceded her in death August 25, 1918. The deceased since her baptism in early infancy was a member of the Lutheran Church, being confirmed by Pastor Theo. Miessler, April 26, 1868. Having lived at Flora and Dunksburg, Mo., near Concordia for a number of years the deceased for the last seven years made her home in Higginsville with her daughter Mary, Mrs. Wm. Stockman. Since Christmas of 1939 she began to fail in health and gradually became worse until Tuesday, March 19th, 1940, when she departed this life reaching an age of 86 years, 2 months and 8 days. Those who survive to bemourn her death are three of her nine children, Mary, Mrs. Wm. Stockman, Henry and Claus Steffens of Higginsville, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Higginsville and burial was made in the Lutheran Cemetery at Flora, Mo., Pastor Wm. O. Schmidt officiating. rwbrauer@iland.net

Her husband taken from her by death in 1878 she was married to Cort Steffens. One daughter was born, Catherine, who passed away in 1884. Then she was united in marriage with John Steffens, March 18, 1885. Four sons were born, William who died in infancy, Henry D. Steffens, of Cole Camp, Mo., John Steffens of Lincoln, Ernest Steffens of Cole Camp, Mo., with whom she made her home until her death. She is survived by one brother, H. H. Lutjen, of Cole Camp, Mo., two sisters, Mrs. Sena Junge of Cole Camp, and Mrs. Maggie Botjger of Walnut, Kansas. Three brothers preceded her in death. She leaves also 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held in the home of Ernest where she passed away on Monday, January 15, the day before her birthday on which she would have attained the age of 89 years. Services were held in Zion Lutheran church, Lincoln, Mo., the Rev. O. L. Bernthal, officiating and preaching two sermons, a German sermon on Ps. 17:15 and an English sermon on Gen. 47:9. The body was laid to rest in Zion Lutheran cemetery. Pallbearers were: William Claus, John Olaf Luetjen, Henry T. Junge and Henry Schnackenberg. Typed as found. Please note: Obit's may have mistakes Cole Camp Courier Thursday, Feb. 28, 1935; Pg. 1 Gustave Dueber, Tipton's oldest citizen, died Sunday night at his home on West Moniteau street, after six years of illness, much of this time spent in his invalid chair. Mr. Dueber had a varied and interesting life. Born February 16, 1838 in Dermbach, Prussia, Germany, he migrated to America with his parents in 1847. He was the oldest of a family of nine children, and the last to survive. The first home was in the Haw creek neighborhood, south of Smithton. In March 1866, he came to Tipton and established himself in business and for the next 51 years, he was an active force in the business life of Tipton, retiring in 1917. Mr. Dueber was for a short time a member of the State Militia, engaging in the battle of Cole Camp. Serious illness bringing an honorable discharge. He also served in the early history of the county court as judge. On May 15, 1873 he married Miss Adele Holtsnider and they were the parents of six children, Miss Regina dying in 1904, a son at nine years of age. There are left two sons, Oscar and Lawrence and two daughters, Misses Olive and Clara, all of the home, of whose faithful care of the aged father, too much could not be said.
