Mo Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Mo/Benton/11035 Surname: POWERS ------------------------- BENTON COUNTY, MO; Powers Family I am a local historian and most interested in the family of Hosea Powers. He may have been the first settler in Cole Camp, MO, at it the present site of the town. At any rate he owned a lot of land and was a survyer, physician and state senator. In trying to expand the history of our community I am seeking anything I can get on the family as it was so important in our history. If you can help it would be most appreciated. One Urania Powers is still buried here in the oldest cemetery. I believe she was a daughter-in-law. Your help will be most appreciated. Bob Owens; Cole Camp, MO

There are a few stones but none can be read so it remains a mystery just what cemetary this was. One stone appeared to have the name WHITE, but this could have been WRIGHT. It is hard to find and on the land a rather unfriendly individual. Bob Owens....Cole Camp, MO

The Fowlers were one of the leading families, in fact, THE leading family, of the pre Civil War community, with Samuel Fowler being the first. There is a lot of information on the family and I suggest you contact Larry Fowler,106 N. Hickory, Cole Camp, MO 65325. When the Fowler slaves were freed many took the name of Fowler and the one referenced by Alvin was known as Uncle Ky, and was a much beloved individual. My mother recalls that as a child all the kids wanted to walk with him and he would hold their hands. He also became a bank director and built a house - that still stands - in Cole Camp, MO.

    3. Posted on: Benton Co. Mo Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Mo/Benton/11025 Surname: TIETJEN ------------------------- BENTON COUNTY, MO; THE TIETJEN FAMILY. There certainly were Tietjens around here, that is the town of Cole Camp and in northern Benton County. Some lived on a farm east of town. One, Frederich, was killed in the Battle of Cole Camp, June 19, 1861. An Ernest Tietjen was an optomertist and jeweler during the 1920s and early 1930s. Our published history of the German community of Cole Camp and Northern Benton County, lists the Tietjens as coming from Ottendorf (same village as my ancestors) and from Hömuv-Lindorf-Bremervoerde. To the best of my knowledge there are no more Tietjens living in this area but there are undoubtly some who are related to the Tietjens. Hope this helps.
