    1. [MOBENTON-L] Harmon Haase Jr. Killed
    2. Denise Hoehns
    3. Please note: Many obits contain many errors. Cole Camp Courier, Thursday, July 13, 1905 Harmon Haase Jr. Killed (Herman Harms, Jr.) He Was Thrown from a Mule Last Friday and Dragged to Death. The Heroic Act of His Little Thirteen-year-old Sister. Last Friday, the thirteen-year-old daughter Maggie and the eight-year-old son Harmon, children of Harman Haase, Sr., who resides about six miles south of Cole Camp, came to town to do some trading. The girl rode a gray mare and the boy a young mule. They finished their trading about noon and started for their home. The boy tied the halter rein around his waist, as he said to better control the mule, his sister told him that would not do and insisted that he untie it which he started to do but, before he succeeded in getting it untied, the mule commenced bucking and he was thrown to the ground. The mule started running and kicking and the halter rein was just long enough to allow the boy to drag at its heels. The little girl started out after the mule but it was soon out of sight. She does not remember whether she finally overtook the mule or whether it returned to the mare she was riding. When she again came to it she was near the Harms place. She ran to the house and secured a knife and coming back to where the mule was, cut the unfortunate little boy loose from it just as he breathed his last. No one was home at the Harms but the children. The sister of the dead boy mounted her horse again and rode it into a deep ditch and the Harms children assisted her in getting the body on the horse in front of her and in this manner she took it between four or five miles to the home of Richard Kreisel, where she knew her father would be working in the hay field. Upon examination it was discovered that the boy had been kicked several times by the mule, and that his little body was bruised and cut from head to foot from being dragged over the rocky road; just what distance will probably never be known but which must have been considerable, judging from the wounds. The funeral occurred Saturday, the interment being in the Monsees cemetery. It will be remembered that Mrs. Haase, the mother of the little boy, died about two weeks ago. rwbrauer@iland.net
