John spent his entire career with the Telephone Company working his way to the top as did his father Cleo Frank Craig. John retired from the Southern New England Telephone company in 1983 as Vice President of Engineering. John was a loving father, a caring husband, devoted to his church and community. He will be sorely miss by all that knew him. Our family roots run deep in Rich Hill and my father's accomplishments are a tribute to the spirit and heritage of all the pioneer families that settled Bates County in the westward expansion.

In 1854, Crittendom Sharp acquires land in Bates County, Missouri. This land is located very near who I believe to be his sister, Jane Sharp Rains and her husband, George. Since Jane Sharp Rains was born in TN (probably Campbell County), I am hoping someone will recognize his name. If in fact Jane and Crittendom are brother and sister, I am anxious to find out who their parents might be. I am thinking that Jane and her husband came to Missouri (about 1833) and he followed later. Does this name ring a bell with any of the Sharp researchers in Campbell County, TN or are there Crittendom Sharp descendents still in Bates County, MO, who might have a clue about the parents of Jane Sharp Rains or Crittendom Rains? Obviously, the brother/sister relationship is just a guess. Jane and George Rains had a son who they named Crittendom, so perhaps the child was named for her brother. I'd appreciate any suggestions. Posted on: Bates County Biographies Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Mo/BatesBios/14 Surname: Bradley, Wallace, Arbogast, Briscoe, Rush, Reed, Burnham, Belford ------------------------- I have a little ancestral data of my family who originated in Bates Co. that may be of interest to someone. I have just begun my genealogy search, and I have recently posted messages on the Bradley GenForum (1/04/01 & 1/09/01) and the Wallace GenForum (1/08/01). My father and mother both came from Bates Co., and that is as far back as I go. My father, Robert William Bradley, was born at Ballard, MO ?/?/1882 descended from William (?) Bradley and Carolyn Briscoe. No dates or origins but I do have the first names of eight children. The only thing I have from my father is a tattered thin-leathered autograph book -"compliments of Sam, Levy, & Company, Butler, MO". I suspect it was given to students by the teachers who, I think, also autographed it. Some autographs are signed with first and last names, and some have dates (1898-1894) and towns. My mother, Lottie Lea Wallace, was born at or near Amoret, MO 6/14/1891 descended from Carter A. Wallace and Oceana Arbogast m.10/18/1874 Hustonia, Pettis, Co. MO. From this family I have: -The family bible of C & O. Wallace which contains the names and birth dates of 7 children. Also, there are entries under 'miscellaneous' for a Wallace female who is unknown in relationship, and the death of a male Arbogast who I don't believe is Oceana's father. (Oceana apparently descended from W. B. Arbogast and Louisa (?).) -Lottie's school report cards dated 1898, 1899, 1904, & 1907 with teachers names. Two are from Grandview school. -A post card posted and stamped at Amoret, 12/1910 , with my mothers picture and addressed to a brother at a KC address. -A small envelope dated 1908 postmarked at La Cygne, Kansas addressed to Lottie Wallace at Amoret containing a dance invitation at Knights of Pythias Opera House with a printed ‘social’ card from Ames Rush. -Found with the above invitation, but not known if related to the dance were four elegantly hand scripted original cards with the names: Lottie L. Wallace, Mr.Carl_ N Reed, Tressie H. Burnham, and Mark R. Burnham. The back of Mark's card was press printed: "Compliments of Central Business College" with a KC address and a free catalogue offer. I guess these may have been what they called dance cards. -The wedding announcement of Frances Buelah Wallace to Edward Belford which occurred in Wichita Kansas. If you think there is any information here of interest to you, I would be pleased to send a copy to you. My e-mail: joe@designtech.net I would, of course, appreciate any feedback on my ancestry which, you see, is lacking.
Does anyone have access to the 1920 Census for Bates Co.? I would appreciate a lookup for Samuel & Laura Bolin who were residing at S. 6th Street, Box 520 in Richhill. Any other information for Samuel or Laura (children unknown at this time) is greatly welcome, as I am trying to track down descendents. Patrick, I have also found them to be of much help but on requesting info about an obit in December, 2000, this is what they sent to me: As of January 1, 2001, the following research policy goes into effect: Society staff will limit research for individuals to a maximum of three specific requests per letter, with a limit of four such letters per year (total search requests not to exceed 12.) Missouri residents and Society members will not be charged for staff research time. Members should include their membership number - found on Society mailing labels - with their request. Out-of-state patrons who are not members of the Society will be allowed the same search limits as stated above, but will be charged a non-refundable search fee of $15.00 per letter. All patrons will be charged for copies and postage. Due to small staff size and limited time, all letters received will be given a maximum of one hour research time. If the requested research exceeds this time limit, the names of private researchers will be supplied, as well as information of the Society's interlibrary loan service. Please include a self-addresssed, stamped envelope with each letter for response. END I am out of state and they have always sent me an obit that I had date of death for at cost of copy and postage. The above will hurt me unless I join the Society. I have also ordered many microfilms of old MO newspapers from them here at our library through interlibrary loan. My family is all from Texas Co., MO and I have made over 1200 copies from the Cabool Enterprise and Houston Herald newspapers that had such wonderful info on my families. We are researching Cluck, Bradshaw, Manning and Bledsoe of Bates Co., MO. - my husband's line. His ancestor is Ptolemy Bledsoe to Lewis Allen Bledsoe to William Bledsoe to Edward bledsoe (my husbands grandfather). The family migrated from Orange Cty Indiana to Fort Scott Kansas (across the border from Bates and Vernon Ctys Mo). They later moved on to Holly Colorado. The State Historical Society of Missouri began a new policy January 1, of this year. I received copies of newspaper articles from the State Historical Society of Missouri in November, 2000, and the letter that they sent with my copies included a note: "Society staff will limit research for individuals to a maximum of three sepcific requests per letter, with a limit of four such letters per year (total requests not to exceed 12.) Missouri residents and Society members will not be charged for staff research time. Members should include their membership number - found on Society mailing labels - with their request. Out of state patrons who are not members of the Society will be allowed the same research limits as stated above, but will be charged a non-refundable search fee of $15.00 per letter." Their letter included this statement: "Please note that unless a complete citation is provided--name of town, title of paper, date of issue (month/day/year), page and column - a request will be considered research, and count toward the research limit." They DO offer interlibrary loan service for Missouri newspapers on microfilm to public and college libraries anywhere in the US. Names of private researchers can be provided on request. Dot
To whom it may concern: In the past I have found old newspaper information by contacting the following address and including a donation and a self addressed stamped envelope for the requested information: State Historical Society of Missouri Attention Newspaper Library 1020 Lowry Street Columbia, Missouri 65201-7298 The people there have been most helpful and have located some valuable information for my research. I'm sure they'll help anyone who asks. Please be sure to provide as much information as possible to assist them in their research. They have most of the newspapers from all over the state of Missouri in their archives. Good Luck, Patrick O'Neal
