Susan: All the papers that are on the Haddock site are also on the Barry Co. MO, web site. I moved them over so that people could search and compare with other data and by using the search engine feature. I recorded all information that was of genealogical nature - that I could read that is - not just personal interest stories. If there were 3 papers available then I probably only transcribed one paper. Usually I transcribed the Cassville one if there was one available because Cassville is the county seat and those papers have more news around the county than the Monett papers had. So, in other words, your story may be reported in one of the other papers that has been filmed but that wasn't transcribed. The papers that are available are not a comprehensive group, because there were some weeks that no paper at all was filmed. I think that those probably weren't filmed because they weren't available. These early papers for our county are on microfilm and can be borrowed from the MO Historical Society on an inter-library loan. So no matter where you live, your library can order them on a loan and you can go to the library and read them. If it were me - I would borrow a roll of film and read it to see if I could find the information about the train wreck. I do have copies of all the papers that I transcribed on file. Given a date I can look to see if I missed reading something or if there was a readable paper for that date The earliest funeral home records - Callaway Funeral Home - have been transcribed by the Lawrence Co. Historical Society. I don't know of any others that have survived time that go back that far. I did check the Callaway Funeral Home records and did not see your people listed. The centennial book of 1887 -1987 for Monett might have something listed but there is no Betterton names in the index. I don't have time to thumb through it for a train wreck photo, but maybe someone who has a copy will do that for you. I do have a "maybe" clue for you. Somewhere I saw a post card of a train wreck that happened in the Monett area - early in the 1900's but I don't remember the date and don't know where I saw the card. Maybe some of our readers will know about the card or have one that they could share with us - and fill in those blanks so you can see if this is a good clue or not. There is a notice that Mrs. Ed Betterton died in 1901 who lived at Marshall Hill. It is in the May 14, 1901 Monett Times paper. It does not mention a train wreck. As I remember 1901 was a year that few papers were avaialbe to read and many of the Monett ones were missing. And some were just plain not readable. So as I remember going through what I had available with a fine tooth comb. I did not have papers to read from Feb. 28 to Mar. 14 of that year of the Monett Times. I don't remember if there were other papers filmed for that time period or not. But if so it might pay to see if you can get the film. You can find that out by talking to the MO Historical Society. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/data/obits/b/bettertoned1.htm Hope this helps. Without you and your contributions my research would be incredibly stymied. Donna, in your signature line you ask about information regarding Barry County ancestors. My Barry County ancestors include the following surnames: Betterton, Pannell, Whittington, and Zinn. These families lived in Barry County starting around 1850. A majority of them left around 1910. My great-great grandparents were George Edward Betterton and Nancy Angelina (Zinn) Betterton. From what I can determine, this couple died young and left two orphaned daughters; Viva and Myrtle. I can not document either of their deaths. I have a lead on information that George Edward Betterton died between 4 May 1898 and 7 Jun 1899 in a train wreck. Is there any information about this train wreck available? I would think something like this would have been written about in the newspapers. The Haddock Family website has done a fabulous job of transcribing personal interests stories in newspapers during this time and nothing is found. I would love to hear from anyone connected to these families. I would also be interested in information that could possibly help me document the train wreck that killed George Edward Betterton.
