    3. I live in Kansas City and recently, there have been articles in the local papers about people who interview retired military or persons who served in the wars. As I understand it, they make an appointment, then have a general discussion just to get comfortable with the person they are going to interview -- get them talking about themselves -- and then they either videotape the discussion or tape record it, trying to do so in an atmosphere wbere everyone is comfortable and the person is not really aware of the taping. kind of a general chat type situation. Ruth. Jane Foley <mjfent@bellsouth.net> wrote: Barbara, Tell me more about your visiting seniors and the shoebox. I go into senior facilities every week to do a musical program. Your are right in that there are seniors who have no one to visit them. Also, there are seniors whose memory is good and some that aren't. I guess my question is how do you do this? I have thought about something similiar but didn't know how to put it together. 3. You folks may already know about this, but the Barry Co. Museum is currectly doing oral histories of long-time residents age 80 +. The lady that does the bulk of the interviews does so only with a referral from someone, and sends the interviewee a letter to ask for permission. She then interviews them maybe an hour at a time, once a week I think, with specific themes in mind. After it's done, they transcribe the tape recorded interviews and her notes and edit out duplicate information and then they put it together into a story. They type it up and send a copy of it to the interviewee, so they can check for errors, and then they end up in a book. The next one should be out anytime, and one of the subjects is Raymond Phariss, who is 102, I think? I referred him to them, as well as another centurian from Purdy. Another fellow, Earl Atwell from Monett, is another fellow I referred them to, and last I heard he was proofreading 130+ pages of information. Also, I know that Fran Bolton, Penny Bailey, and the folks working on the Barry County School project have gone to some nursing homes, but more often they go to Senior Centers. They can post a notice letting them know they are coming, so the members can bring information, pictures, etc. of their own to add to what they have. They can also help with indentifying school kids in those pictures. jay --- Ruth Kent <eruth@swbell.net> wrote: > I live in Kansas City and recently, there have been > articles in the local papers about people who > interview retired military or persons who served in > the wars. 3. If you have a local JROTC group at a high school or a history class from the high school to make a project of recording some of these conversations with our older generation, it would help out the local historical societies. I also think it would be beneficial to the students. I would make history much more personal for the students. I only wish I had learned history in the context of genealogy when I was in school - it would have meant more to me at the time. Like Ruth mentioned these recordings could be whatever is comfortable for the person they are interviewing - notes, audio, video, etc. Our WW I veteran population is dwindling fast and this would be a great opportunity for a JROTC or scout group to record their stories.
