I agree with Betty about the hat on this man, but the medal could be a GAR ribbon/medal. For a good image of the GAR medal, see: www.suvcw.org/gar.htm The hat could also be something associated with the GAR. Any Re- Inactors Out there ???Yes he is wearing a medal. Can't tell what kind. I am not familiar with what they might have worn during the Spanish American war?? Teddy Roosevelt and all that! Firemen and Police men wore hats of that style very early, especially in the cities! That is very interesting! He could be a Civil War Veteran or the son of one! Yes, I agree the medal looks like GAR, which I am not that familiar with! (Most of my ancestors were on the other side!) :) I enjoyed reading the History of the GAR. I would guess that this man is the Civil War Veteran. My Barry County ancestor, Edward Clanton, was a Union Veteran. He lived until 1916 and attended several Civil War reunions in the area.
