MOBARRY READERS, A month ago I ran into Darla Marbut at the store and she said that she hadn't heard much out the Cemetery Committee lately. I got to thinking and you know she was right! So I thought I would recap for you what we accomplished in 2007 and share with you some of the work that lies ahead of us in 2008. Ted Roller, Jay Trace and myself spent a good part of last year tramping through the hills of Barry County enduring heat, cold, snakes, tick and chiggers in an effort to locate, photograph, preserve and protect our ancestor's final resting places. A recap of last years work shows that landscape work and/or stone repairs were performed in the following cemeteries. Corsicana Cemetery--Worked on storm damage. Henry Hadley Cemetery--Restored and fenced. Restoration made possible by George's Inc. John Hadley Cemetery--Restored and fenced. Restoration made possible by George's Inc. Haddock Cemetery--Located, read and photographed. Need attention. Higgs Cemetery--Assisted Higgs relatives in clean up efforts. Clark Farm Cemetery--Located, read and photographed. Needs attention. H. L. Jackson Cemetery--Located, read and photographed. Lee Grave Site--Located, read and stones restored. Liberty Cemetery--Located, read and photographed. Maddy Cemetery--Stone reset. Truelove Cemetery--Stones reset. Mt. Comfort Cemetery located. Monett IOOF--Jay's great work on photographing all stones. Stinnett Cemetery--Monett Boy Scouts began the work of clearing and fencing. Sulherd Cemetery--Read and photographed. The following are examples of why the BCGHS has taken action to save and protect our abandoned cemeteries. McDowell Cemetery--DESTROYED, located by dowsing. Cemetery on Jack Freeman farm--DESTROYED, located by dowsing. Burials on Betty Jo Thomas farm--DESTROYED, located by dowsing. Keetsville Cemetery--DESTROYED, located by dowsing, some stones found. Star City Ranch Cemetery--DESTROYED, located by dowsing. Stringer Cemetery--DESTROYED, located by dowsing, some stones found. Unfer Farm Cemetery--DESTROYED, located by dowsing, markers found. The Committee is in the process of laying out our plans for 2008. Although plans are not complete we have several projects in the works. Currently the Stinnett Cemetery is being cleared by the Monett Boy Scouts. The County road crew has widen the road in front of the cemetery and removed all the trees. Soon the Scouts will fence the portion along the road and install a walk in gate. The BCGHS Committee will reset and restore the stones after the landscape work is completed. The H.L. Jackson Cemetery is scheduled to be fenced and restored soon. We are waiting for a bid for fencing the cemetery. As soon as we work out a price, work will begin there. I have the stones repaired and in my garage waiting to be reset. Ted Roller and myself cleared and recorded the Anderson Cemetery in February. We reset the stones and staked off unmarked graves for pictures. Donna will have those pictures to post when she returns. We have several other projects in the works and I'll keep you updated as they progress. Jack Fly BCGHS Cemetery Committee
