List Readers, every now and then I get mail from people who are confused about where Barry County is and how it was divided up in the old days. I am sure that those folks are not familiar with the area because they may not have studied the early day maps. It is sort of funny, in a way, because I have had people try to tell me that in 1900 or 1880 that Barry County was in some other county. I know that most of you know better - but I thought that I would send you the map link for the pages that we have on the site so that you can see all the changes that Barry County went through. In 1840 Barry County took in part of St. Clair County and all of present day Dade Counties, but in 1841 Dade and St. Clair Counties have been established. Some of the Rev. War soldiers we have may have been in Dade or St. Clair Counties - that I do not know about. But I would like to know more about that subject. We have two maps for the year of 1840 and both are rather confusing - or at least I think so. The map we have prior to 1840 is the 1834 one and it shows Barry as part of Greene County at that time. In 1821 Barry County was part of Wayne County and maybe even part of the territory just below it. And in 1816 all of the area that is now Barry County was in what they called Lawrence County for a short time. Missouri became the 24th state on August 10, 1821. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/Maps/index.htm Donna Cooper
