My name is Frank Hatton [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) I have been doing look-ups in the book "Past and Present" I have scanned all of this book into my computer. What I would like to do is send CD's to those that produced the book and get permission to publish it on the web somehow. This Barry county site would be a good place. The book does not have an index of names. I have been creating one, that now has 6330 names in it. And that is only for about 1/4 of the book. Any help or suggestions?

Frank, surely you know that you need to get permission from the person who wrote this book to publish anywhere - and also for that matter you need permission to reproduce it on CD.   Sometimes libraries have permission from authors to reproduce copyrighted work with copy machines but usually you see that kind of permission given on out of print work. The book you are talking about was published in 1992 by Earle Staponski and so I would think that it is probably still under copyright. I am not a lawyer but do know that the fair use part of the copyright law does not include copying the compete book or any major part of the work without permission to do so. They say that is so that the author isn't cheated out of future sales that might come his way.  Copyright fines are high - playing with the odds could be very costly.
