Yes, the Civil War letter was from Zachariah Higgs who was living in Dallas County, AR a to his brother who was living on the Higgs place near MT Pleasant (later Butterfield,MO) but it has often puzzled me? Family History Lore says that Thomas McDuffa Higgs fought in the Battle of Pea Ridge. I have never been able to document this....The dates of the letter and the Battle of Pea Ridge are very close together.... McDuffa did attain the rank of sergt. So where was McDufffa at the time? I do not know? His aged parents were living on the old homeplace. In any case the letter was kept for all these years folded in to the Higgs Family Bible.and was passed down to the youngest HIggs son. Which was my Great Grandfather Seth Rederick Higgs, who Lived most of his life on the old homeplace near Mt. Pleasant, Barry County, MO. Adeline( the dec. sister) is buried in the Higgs Cemetery. McDuffa is buried in Mt. Olive very near Pioneer on the Newton county line.
