My Great-Great Grandfather, my Grandfather, and many more immigrants from Northern Italy came to the Monett area in the 1800's. This group of Italians were Protestants and one of the primary reasons for leaving Italy was persecution from the Catholic majority in Italy. They formed the Waldensian Presbyterian Church in 1875. All of this is to say that it would have highly unusual at that time in history for a Waldensian Italian to be married in a Catholic Church. In a check of those buried in the Waldensian Cemetery there are no Stringers. I of course do not have conclusive information however; it is my feeling that there is small chance that Your Bartolomea Stringatto would have been connected to the Waldensians of Barry County. Hope this is of some help. Ralph Lamberson On 9/30/2011 6:59 PM, Donna Cooper wrote: List readers, I know some of you are related to the Stringer family or have done some research on the clan. My family has been looking for information on our great great grandfather Bartolomea Stringatto. The name was later shortened to Stringer. He came from Italy and lived in the home of Charlie Rouot at the time of the 1880 census. The relationship was listed as cousin. Bart married Pinotea Averell (perhaps shortened later to Avaro/Avero) in the Catholic Chursh at Pierce city in approx 1886 and moved to the Cassville area in early 1890’s. We believe these individuals were Waldensians from the northern Italy region. Any info or direction as to how to track our great great grandfather in Lawrence County would be greatly appreciated. My Uncle Jock Stringer lived in Monett all his life and worked for the railroad from which he retired.
