Donna, The story your granddaughter told you is about the Utter-Van Ornum Massacre on the Oregon Trail in September, 1860 by the Snake River in what is now southwestern Idaho. A party composed of 8 wagons with 44 people was attacked by hostile Indians. Almost two months later, a rescue party found 10 survivors clinging to life in shelters nearly 100 miles from where the wagon train was attacked. The surviovors had resorted to canabalism to stay alive. Elijah Palmer Utter and his family was one of the wagons travelling in the wagon train. Elijah descends from my 9th great-grandfather, Thomas Utter, Sr. There has been a book written about it and in Wild West magazine, with much information found on the internet about the massacre. Karen Utter Jennings <CAKyvwmBAXH=bqDHHc5bukv_tGqwnnkQrQJWszdF_g_Z6Z15nTw@mail.gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 List readers, yesterday on the phone my son told me that his wife and sons were on a trip and so he asked his five year daughter where she would like to go while they were gone. Get this - she said she wanted to go on a bicycle ride to the cemetery near the house they just bought. It is located in the historical district and they are going to moving there in a few days. Here is the background story about that - Henry Ford's brother and sister-in-law built the house and it was built in 1913. So - on the phone she told me about a person buried there that the Indians had killed and about an entire family that died in the 1860's. She said that there were a lot of old graves there dating back to the 1860's and 1870's. She explained that some people died before Idaho was a state and that some people died while traveling the Oregon Trail. She explained how the stones looked and about the angles craved on the markers of children and babies. She said that went I come to visit her in Boise that she will take me there and show me all these things. It sounds to me like she had a history lesson while there. I dream and hope that someday I can take her to a few of the Barry County cemeteries and show her where her ancestors are buried - who knows maybe even tell her some stories about them. It sounds like a genealogist was born yesterday, or - at least there is one in the making, and so I had to share it with you. Donna Cooper
John Foster married the widow Verda Strickler (nee Curtis) about 1924, in either Carroll Co., Arkansas or Barry Co. They are on the 1930 census for Barry Co. They had one child that I know of, Maxine Foster. She married John Akins. Does anyone know anything about John Foster? Thanks, Bob Foster Virginia
http://www.cassville-democrat.com/story/1760143.html Century Farm families recognized Democrat Photo/Lindsay Reed Farms owned by Randall Black, of Cassville, Jackie Higgs and Betty Lamberson, of Purdy, Odell and Joyce Mattox, south of Aurora, Jeff Holder, of Butterfield, and John and Linda Sperandio, of Monett, were added to the University of Missouri's list of Century Farms during the Barry County University Extension Council's annual meeting on Sept. 1. Pictured above, in the front row, is: Joe Payne. Second row: Dylan Chiu-Pinheiro, Eden Chiu-Pinheiro, Jacob Higgs and Kaya Higgs. Third row: Kodi Gilbert, Charlie Holder, Jeff Holder, Laura Holder, Brad Holder, Linda Sperandio, John Sperandio, Ralph Lamberson, Betty Lamberson, Dr. Dan Pinheiro, Shanna Higgs, Jackie Higgs, Joyce Mattox, Odell Mattox and Randall Black. The Barry County University Extension Council honored five Century Farm families at its annual meeting on Sept. 1. This year's Century Farm families are from the Cassville, Butterfield and Verona areas. Farms owned by Laverne Black and Randall Black, of Cassville, Ruth Higgs and Betty Lamberson, of Purdy, and the late Joe Higgs, Odell and Joyce Mattox, of Verona, Jeff and Eva Holder, of Butterfield, and John and Linda Sperandio, of Monett, were added to Barry County's list of honored Century Farm families last week. The Blacks' 40-acre farm, which is located on Flat Creek in Cassville, was originally purchased by Randall's grandfather, John Black, from the Missouri Land Bureau of Scotland in 1892. John Black paid $4 per acre for the land. The 108-acre farm owned by Jackie Higgs and Betty Lamberson is located on Highway W four miles from Wheaton and five miles from Butterfield. The land was acquired by Betty's great, great grandmother, Georgia Edna (Brattin) Higgs, in 1902. Jeff Holder owns 80 acres of the original Holder farm, which was purchased by his grandmother in 1903. The land is located on Highway 37 in Butterfield across from George's. Odell and Joyce Mattox's farm, which was originally owned by CH and Emma Mattox, is located south of Aurora. The couple owns 99 acres of the original 320-acre farm that was purchased in 1906. The Sperandio's 40-acre farm is located east of Monett. The land was originally purchased by John's grandfather in 1911. Since the University of Missouri Extension Century Farm program began in 1976, over 65 area families have been recognized for maintaining land in Barry County for at least 100 years. The first Barry County property owner recognized with the Century Farm honor was Maurine Cupps. To qualify for the Century Farm program, each family must own the farm for 100 years, be direct descendants of the original landowner and own at least 40 acres of the original property. The qualifying acreage must also make a financial contribution to the farm income. Property owners interested in applying for the Century Farm Family honor can request applications by writing to Extension publications, Missouri University, 2800 Maguire Boulevard, Columbia, MO 65211. Applications can also be obtained at the Barry County University Extension office located on the second floor of the Barry County Courthouse in Cassville. Applications are available from Feb. 15 to June 15 each year. A small fee is required to cover clerical costs, a certificate and a Century Farm sign. © Copyright 2011 Cassville Democrat. Yes, the Civil War letter was from Zachariah Higgs who was living in Dallas County, AR a to his brother who was living on the Higgs place near MT Pleasant (later Butterfield,MO) but it has often puzzled me? Family History Lore says that Thomas McDuffa Higgs fought in the Battle of Pea Ridge. I have never been able to document this....The dates of the letter and the Battle of Pea Ridge are very close together.... McDuffa did attain the rank of sergt. So where was McDufffa at the time? I do not know? His aged parents were living on the old homeplace. In any case the letter was kept for all these years folded in to the Higgs Family Bible.and was passed down to the youngest HIggs son. Which was my Great Grandfather Seth Rederick Higgs, who Lived most of his life on the old homeplace near Mt. Pleasant, Barry County, MO. Adeline( the dec. sister) is buried in the Higgs Cemetery. McDuffa is buried in Mt. Olive very near Pioneer on the Newton county line. I have wondered for several years now if the John S. McMillin that I submitted as a civil war veteran is the same as the JP that performed several marriages in Barry Co. during the 1870s. As of yet I have not been able to connect one to the other. One marriage the JP performed was for Isaac T McIntosh and Mary E Tilley on Aug 3 1876 in Barry Co. I am certain that Isaac was a brother-in-law of John S. McMillin the Civil War soldier. If anyone can shed any light on the JP please let me know. List Readers, our thanks goes to our featured photo submitter, Frances Coberly who sent us of Cormus Grove School photo of 1946 . Her mother is in the photo and she had it repaired at Walmart. Her parents Nancy (Rose) Woodard and Glen Woodard are buried at Roller, west of Washburn, near the Barry County line. Her grandparents were Keet and Pansy (Banks) Woodard. They were second cousins and are also buried in Roller Cemetery. As most of you know Pansy goes back to Lot and Elizabeth "Bets" Ann (Woodard) Banks. Frances' computer was on the blink so she sent the photo to Phyllis Long and so she scanned and sent it to us. So, a big thanks also goes to Phyllis who helped us log this one as a treasured photo. I looked this photo and immediately saw people that I remember from years gone by. How could so many years have passed? Some of these people be dead already. In the case of James Ellis - not only is he dead but one of his sons is also dead. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/oddsnends/bryfams.htm Have a good Sunday, Donna Cooper

List Readers, sometime earlier today in between a knife and a can of peaches I added three new entries in the Civil War files. Trooper Repass submitted James Wallen as a Confederate; Scott Carson added Andrew Jackson Carson as a Federal; and Stan McKay added John S. List Readers, yesterday I was in the middle of rebuilding the "K" page for Oak Hill Cemetery when I was summoned to help put R19 overhead in one of the rooms we are rebuilding. Oh, my goodness, let me tell you how much I wanted to escape!!!! When I went to bed, I itched all over and in places I am not suppose to itch. That is awful stuff! I want to mention that Phyllis Long is helping me with web work since my web time is limited. For those of you who don't know - we are in the middle of old house construction and also doing an add on to the old part. Our house is 115 years old. Yesterday while in the attic, digging around, I found a mirror that must have been hidden away there almost that long. Amazing how good that they used to make things. I just want to say how much I appreciate having Phyllis Long's help. She is working on Oak Hill right now so if you want to see the added new ones you might click on and scan through the pages. After we are done we'll send a list of all the new names that we added. Today - I added these from obits - Lorena Margaret (Carter) Ball - Barbara Erwin submitted; Leland Smithson Salamon - Barbara Erwin submitted; Thomas Kermit Hermansen - Phyllis Long submitted; Fora Jane (Ash) Roller - Wilma Fields submitted - an old one. For death certificates - Stan McKay added Leonard Lawrence Hadley - he died in Texas; Barbara Cooper added Belle (Miller) Rees. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/data/obits.htm Many thanks to our helpers Stan McKay, Barbara Cooper, Wilma Fields, Phyllis Long, and Barbara Erwin. If you sent something and it hasn't appeared on the web site yet, hang on, it will sooner or later find its way there. Donna Cooper
