The MASMILS mine database shows 2 Uranium mines, one Iron/Copper mine, and quite a few Limestone/Gravel. One of the Uranium mines is the "H L Burtner Uranium Mine", which was owned by the "Silver Spring Mining Co". That mine is in the same general direction from Roaring River that Lockwood Cave is, but the two are not very close to each other. I am curious if there was a mine near Roaring River. Do any of you know anything about this that might help answer the question? List Readers, for forty seven years I have tried to find my Simpson ancestors and figure out my great grandfather's biological family. Around the age of three he was left at the home of Timothy Patrick Mooney and raised as an adopted child. When his adoptive mother died she told him who his mother was and that she wasn't his biological mother. She told him that she had always loved him as if he was her own child. That day changed the world for him and his descendants forever. She said your mother is America Simpson. Later my grandfather told me that George Simpson was his dad's father, which is evidently correct. The problem is which George Simpson. Anyway back to the America Simpson story. Yesterday, a woman and her daughter contacted me who are a part of America's family that I have only known about for a few years. They have their part of the family tree firmed up and knew that my great grandfather went by the name of James Mooney. They are descendants of Dovey Louise Bailey Payton a half sister to James Harvey Simpson Mooney, John Simpson, and Charles Wilkerson. Here is the surprise - they think that another child named Jess was adopted to a family by the name of McCloser. I have never heard of any names like that in Barry County and have no clues as to the situation. I looked on Ancestry for names similar but came up with a fat zero. Do any of you know of a Jess who was adopted that lived somewhere near Munsey or Eagle Rock? I don't know if this is accurate information or not. But am sure that if so, he would have been a child of John Wilkerson's. According to my new found relative, John Wilkerson died leaving America Melinda with small children that she farmed out to different families. Maybe so, but my grandfather was farmed out when she married John Wilkerson because she married him in 1880 and my grandfather was born in 1877 - about 3 years old when he was taken to the door of the Mooney family. In 1910 on the Federal Census America Melinda Simpson Simpson Wilkerson Bailey, wife of Elijah Poe Bailey said she had given birth to 7 children and had 5 living. From that information it is evident that we don't have all their names yet. So I look at the clue above as a good one to work with and to try and document. I am writing to you to see if you know anything about a Jess or know of someone struggling with a family tree that has an adopted child born probably between 1880 and 1886. I am stumped on Jess and could use some help. On Face Book - Barry County GenWeb there are a lot of new subscribers and a lot of activity. If you want to join send me a note. Donna Cooper
List Readers, I am going to tell you about your featured photo tonight because I think it is one of the neatest photos that I've seen. Linda Skelton Corbin posted it on the Barry County GenWeb page on Face Book and gave permission for it to be our featured photo for the week. Here is what she said about it. This was the view from the front porch of my childhood home - picture taken about 1975. The Ennis house had been empty since the 60s. The other house on the left was empty as far back as I can remember - late 50s. I don't know how long that they lived there. Thomas Martin "Marty" Ennis was born in Barry County, MO in 1873. Minnie Beeson was born in Barton County, MO in 1880. They are on the 1900 Census in Mineral Springs, but I can't say that they were in that house. They were in that house as far back as I remember-late 50s. It was a charming little house. They had a cuckoo clock which we loved to see. It seems like they always gave homemade gingerbread on Halloween. When people's dogs would get bit by cooperheads, Mr. Ennis would put some stinky purple medicine on the bite and the dogs always lived. They had about 8 daughters who married into the Weaver, Wireman, Brooks, Bishop, and other families. I think that they belonged to the Union Chapel Church on Hwy 248. My childhood memories are so fuzzy. .http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/oddsnends/bryfams.htm ------------------ There has been a lot of activity on the the Face Book page this week and we have 105 members now. If you want to join our group, let me know. The discussion this week has varied - but here are a few of the high points. Tony Martin posted a 78 recording that is on You Tube of the Macedonia Quartet of Barry County. Roaring River CCC days was part of the discussion along with some photos from that era. Sarah Poff posted a Civil War painting when the day the flag cried - the Pea Ridge battlefield. Allen School, submitted by Barbara Smith, discussion of that photo. Question is still unanswered - was it in Lawrence County? Post Cards and discussion Eagle Rock, Seligman, Monett and Washburn were all part of the week. ----------------- The old house work continues - sheet rock and mud in the old part and putting up framing for walls in the new part today. Good Morning, it is a lucky day today. How do I know? Because the sun is shinning and I have work to do. lol I posted 7 new photos of the old house project on Face Book yesterday. Here is what is happening - We have the siding up and *sigh* finally painted, the guttering is up and we are working on the bedroom that we had to restored due to other restoration problems. I have back and joint problems and so standing on a ladder put me on my back temporarily for a couple of days, but thank goodness, after much ado, that problem is solved. Just when things looked good another one replaced it that is even worse. My sweet little honey of a man has bursitis in his right shoulder and can't lift his right arm. We are a pair of broken down old people trying to fix up an old house. HOWEVER, we have finished all of this - the new school house windows are in and the sheet rock up in that one room. We are taping and working on that now. Once done we will move on into working on the new part. *finally* In the new part, There will be two bathrooms, a kitchen, a coat closet, utility area, as well as a wider door to cut open between the kitchen and the existing dinning area. We have worked on this for 6 months, but it took us so long to tear off the old part and we had so much rain in the spring, and then it turned off so ungodly hot that we couldn't make much progress on the project. Now back to Barry County business, There are several new users and new photos on Barry County GenWeb on Face Book. If you want to sign up just look for our group. We will be adding subscribers, too, but you will need to do that for yourself. The conversation this week has been who lived where west of Washburn, O'Day, Keetsville, Old Town, New Town, and who died when and where. It is interesting to me, because some of these people don't seem to be referring to the web site to see what we have, they are just passing on their own version of the history and expressing their interests in different subjects. Geraldine Wade Pendergraft mentioned that she worked at the Farmer's Exchange in Washburn when she was a young girl but couldn't remember how much Fred Roller, the owner paid for a dozen farm eggs. It seems like it was a quarter, but that might not be even near right. No one that commented knew the answer to that. Janice Patterson Jones, Face Book friend and user sent us a new school photo of Pleasant View School. It is for the years 1948 and 1949. She said she was in the first grade. It is a nice addition and she has all the names of the pupils. The photo has a small amount of damage but is in fair shape. She said she had cut her photo out and then pasted it back in for some unknown reason to her. It is a nice clear photo and adds a great deal to our school project. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/oddsnends/bryfams.htm My web program, Dream Weaver - CS4 is kicking up its hills and trying to spit at me. I have had trouble using it all week. It looks to me like the Java Script, the widget and the spry part of it is now obsolete or not compatible to the software. After reading the forums on the problem I have decided that it will take some time to repair it - if that is even possible. This seems to be a universal problem with all users of the Adobe software. So if you know of anyone - or you have repaired it yourself, please drop me a note and share with me how to do it. That would be greatly appreciated since my time is limited. I have some cemetery things in my mail box that Phyllis Long has been working on that I will try to get posted later today. She has been helping out but has been suffering from carpal tunnel. As you know, that stuff is bad news. Have a good Sunday. Donna Cooper

Hope this is of some help. Ralph Lamberson On 9/30/2011 6:59 PM, Donna Cooper wrote: List readers, I know some of you are related to the Stringer family or have done some research on the clan. My family has been looking for information on our great great grandfather Bartolomea Stringatto. The name was later shortened to Stringer. He came from Italy and lived in the home of Charlie Rouot at the time of the 1880 census. The relationship was listed as cousin. Bart married Pinotea Averell (perhaps shortened later to Avaro/Avero) in the Catholic Chursh at Pierce city in approx 1886 and moved to the Cassville area in early 1890’s. My Great-Great Grandfather, my Grandfather, and many more immigrants from Northern Italy came to the Monett area in the 1800's. This group of Italians were Protestants and one of the primary reasons for leaving Italy was persecution from the Catholic majority in Italy. They formed the Waldensian Presbyterian Church in 1875. All of this is to say that it would have highly unusual at that time in history for a Waldensian Italian to be married in a Catholic Church. In a check of those buried in the Waldensian Cemetery there are no Stringers. Can anyone point me in the direction to find out how to get a cemetery declared as abandoned? Connie Stockton Schmidt
I just noticed at Mount Olive the graves are facing east and the church faces South so it can't be it. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/cemetery/mtolive/DSCN1009.JPG Donna On Sun, Sep 25, 2011 at 9:17 AM, Betty Lamberson <betquilts@leru.net> wrote: > On Friday afternoon we showed the photo to Donald Overton, a childhood > friend just older than me, who remembers a lot about this area, I did not > tell him what I thought, and he said this looks like the old church at > Concord. > Although they were not having church there in my childhood, 40's and 50's, > Our parents, aunts, uncles and cousins, would go up every year before > decoration day and clean up my Grandparents Higgs and Greatgrandparents > Brattins graves.
