    3. List readers, your treat for today is an article that Gayle Foster submitted about Henry Schell. His bushwhacker death is one that most of us have read about but I still think you will enjoy reading the article. It was published in 1995 in the Pea Ridge Graphic and so I added to the newspaper clips that we have on line. Thanks so much Gayle - very interesting! http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/data/news/1995PeaRidgeGraphic.htm Donna Cooper

    3. List Readers, 47 years ago I leaned that great grandfather's mother had left him at the Mooney home when he was about three years old. Through the years there has been a driving force for me to find out who America Simpson was and why she gave away some of her children. My new found relatives seem to think that John Wilkerson died, but they have no idea what happened to George Simpson. I still don't have all the answers but with each passing year I add more to the bulk of data I have gathered. Every time I passed on information and posted about this family, I thought that some day some one will read my stuff and know what I am looking for. A woman named Elyssa Spurgin did just that when she googled America Simpson and found me. She put me in contact with her mother who had some old photos. Marie and her daughter descend through Dovey, a child of Elijah Poe and America (Simpson) Bailey. I remember seeing Dovey one time. She came to my great grandfather, James Harvey Simpson Mooney's funeral. I was 9 years old. I remember she had on a pill box hat. There are still a thousand unanswered questions about this family, but we now have a photo of America, her daughter, one of her husbands, her brother James T. Simpson, her sister Mary Margaret Simpson, and her brother Green Simpson. We also know that George Simpson was her first husband or anyway she had two children by him. I have never been able to find a marriage license for them. John Simpson is buried near James Harvey Simpson Mooney in Washburn Prairie Cemetery. The moral to this find is never give up - keep on looking and seeking and someday your brick walls will look like small, maybe even like paper walls. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/photos/photo-4/baileyElijahAmericaDovey.htm More Photos later. 3. List Readers, we have a very neat old photo from Deena Mault as our featured photo for the week. Here is what Deena has to say about it. Unice Harris and Flora Elizabeth (Baldwin) Harris Unice Aaron Harris was born in Verona MO on Sept 22 1887 and was in Ozark Township, Barry County, MO in the 1920 census. He died Feb 26, 1968 in Reedley, Fresno County, California. Flora Elizabeth Baldwin Harris was born in St. Joseph, Buchanan County, MO on Oct 21, 1890 and was also on the 1920 Barry County census. Flora died Aug 29, 1963 in Dinuba, Tulare County, California. Married April 8, 1909 Their children were born in Barry County and the youngest child I have listed was born in 1936. I wonder what the model of car is? Deena Mault - Soldotna, Alaska Thanks goes to Deena for sharing this unique photo with us. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/oddsnends/bryfams.htm There have been a lot of new photos posted on the Barry County Face Book site along with several new submissions for the Barry County Roots pages. I will be posting photos off and on today, in between work and visiting with a cousin who is driving in from Nebraska. So look for those. One thing that I want to share with you is that a new found family member sent me a photo of my great great grandmother, America Melinda Simpson Simpson Wilkerson Bailey. It was taken in 1900 and she had diphtheria. The story is that they got her up out of death bed and took the photo and so she is very thin. She didn't die until about 1910 or 1911. I will tell you more about all this when I get it on the web. Donna Cooper

    2. Phyllis Long
    3. Elizabeth, I am sending this to the list mail and see if we have any more Moore researchers that can help you. I received this email from Elizabeth Moore Davis looking for information on Israel Coleman Moore buried at Washburn Prairie. I am a descendent of Israel Coleman Moore, that is buried in the Washburn Prairie Cem. I was wondering where you got your information about Israel's brother and father. I have looked for YEARS for his folks. This is so interesting! This Israel had land in Carroll Co. TN. He married Nancy Burkhart in Gibson Co. His land was on the line between these 2 counties. It says in the 1870 census of Barry Co. that Israel's father was born in S.C. I had the DNA done by my brother William Wilder Moore and I found a man in Carroll Co. Tn. that is kin to me. His name is Terry McCaleb, his cousin David Moore did the DNA. There is 1 Israel Coleman Moore buried in Carroll Co Tn. and One other Israel Moore buried there. Nancy Burkhart Moore is buried in Jasper Co. Mo. in the Hackney Cemetery. They moved to MO around 1852, my grandfather James Wilder Moore was born in Tn. around 1850ish. I would like to hear from you sometime, when you have time. Thanks you!! Elizabeth Moore Davis (my father was Lynn Riley Moore)

Through my research into the Akin family I have had some help. It has been difficult finding information and pictures on them, but those who have helped me are: Donna Cooper, Bonnie Merck, Joan Viney, and Amy Lewarne. Bonnie Merck sent me the wonderful professional picture of William Oscar Akin and Susan A. (Walker) Akin, Joan Viney had lots of pictures on the family of Emmet Lee Akin, and Amy Lewarne sent me pictures of the William Fred Akin family. Thanks to everyone. If others are familiar with the Akin Family, I am very interested in pictures, plus I would love to have directions to their old house place which I visited many years ago and don't believe I could find again today. The house is no longer their, but the rock foundation was there last I visited and perhaps the people who own the property may remember back around 1984 when we spoke to them, asking permission to come onto their property to look at the old house site.

Cooper, as far as we can decipher, on the Oklahoma City Health Department certificate of birth.  It listed his birthplace as Cassville, Missouri.  It said his age on last birthday was 35.  We believe that may not be correct.  We have found two other documents on Ancestry.com.  On his military registration which was dated September 12, 1918 his birth was listed as September 10, 1897 and his address then as 1110 E. Bond, Monett, Barry County, Missouri.  > >There was also a marriage certificate to Ora Lee Shultz dated July 1, 1920 in Carthage, Jasper, Missouri.  Except for these documents we cannot find any other information under the name Sanford Cooper. > >In the 1930 Census of Pawhuska, Osage, Oklahoma my mother's biological mother, Sanford's wife, was listed as Ora Lee Cooper, widowed.  Now Ora Lee Cooper was married once before at age seventeen and she was the Ora Lee Shultz.  We believe she was widowed sometime after her first marriage but do not know about Sanford.  We have no documentation of death.  We know they were married but we are curious about him being listed on the birth certificate.  Sanford and Ora were married in 1920, my mother was born in 1930.  So since she was listed as a widow in the 1930 Census for my mother to have been born on November 26, 1930 she would have been conceived around the end of February or early March of 1930.  That would mean Sanford had to be alive or she became pregnant by someone else and just named Sanford as the father.  My sister and I are finding much information on our biological grandmother Ora Lee but nothing else on Sanford.  If you would be able to point us in some direction that would produce some results that would be wonderful.  I welcome any help you can offer.  We are just trying to find family and history so we can get some questions answered. > >Thank you, > >Mrs. Marilyn Greganti >5952 Brice Cove North >Olive Branch, MS 38654 > > >

    3. List Readers, this morning there was a WONDERFUL bushwhacker story on Face Book that Linda Skelton Corbin posted. I asked her to add it to our Bushwhacker pages on the web site. Since it is such a unique story I am going to post it also on the mailing list for you to read. The obit is not part of it, but is the wife of the man killed. _____________________ Cassville Republican, Thursday, Weekly Paper, January 30, 1913 Mrs. Elizabeth Skelton, familiarly known as Aunty Betsy Skelton, passed away at the home of her son, George Skelton, of near Eagle Rock, Thursday morning, Jan 23, aged 80 years, 8 months and 21 days. Her health had been failing for some time and for several days it was realized that her conditions were serious. Elizabeth Skeleton, widow of the late John Skelton, was born in Tennessee, May 2, 1832. With her parents she moved to Missouri in 1838. She as married in 1850 to John Skelton, who died some years ago. Prior to their settlement on Roaring River they lived in Arkansas and near Seligman for a number of years. They were the parents of eight children, four of whom are living: Mrs. U. Shrum, Mary, George, and Sam, all living in and near that vicinity. Mrs. Skelton was well known throughout the community where she had lived for nearly a half of a century in the highest esteem of all. As a citizen, as a neighbor and a mother, she endeavored to embody the best and noblest principles of living. The kindly words spoken of her by those who knew her is the best evidence of her worth and Christian character. Since 1870 she had been a member of the Baptist church and had lived a faithful member until death. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Chappell and Smallwood Friday afternoon in the presence of a large number of relatives, neighbors and friends and interment made at the Munsey Cemetery. ____________________________ Linda writes - Elizabeth Skelton Skelton was my great-great-grandmother. I have tried and tried to find a PICTURE of her with no luck. This is the story of her husband's death: from my cousin Jerry Stephenson: On August 26, 1866, soldiers (bushwhackers* ) came to their farm. A barrel of molasses was in the smokehouse; the bushwackers dumped it in the yard. Cornbread was cooling on the table; they fed it to their horses. The family had one good mare and the bushwhackers stole it. John M. Skelton was murdered. * In this part of Arkansas/Missouri a bushwhacker could be a Confederate soldier or a Union soldier. I don't know which kind of outlaw these bushwhackers were. Two of Elizabeth's brothers fought CSA in the Civil War; one fought Union; two were too young. Two of her sisters married sons of the staunch Union man and famous bear hunter John Gaskins. Her youngest brother Henry Clay Skelton married the daughter of Dr. Christopher Greenup Kelly, Mary Ladona Kelly. Their children founded the Idaho branch of our family.

I find myself on Face Book and don't know how my name got there, along with a lot of other people I know. Patricia In a message dated 10/17/2011 12:14:18 A.M. 3. I am sorry, but I am not the one to talk to about it - and doing it on the mailing list is not the way to do it either. Maybe someone will write to you personally and help you get on. It will take some explaining, so if you have a family member who can hook you up there at your personal computer that would work the best. 3. List Readers, do we have someone who can help this lady that maybe knows the answers to her questions.   Sandy, I haven't done professorial research since I took over as the coordinator of Barry County almost six years ago. I will send a cc to the list mail group to see if any of them can help you. It might be that someone is researching the Hays or Montgomery line and has some notes that can help you.   Donna Cooper >________________________________ >From: Bill & Sandy Evans <evans.wj@starstream.net> >To: donnac58@yahoo.com >Sent: Sunday, October 16, 2011 5:43 PM >Subject: CC - Barry Co., MO > > > >Dear Ms Cooper >  >My name is Sandy Evans and my grandfather (Robert Lee Hays) and grandmother (Amanda Melvina Montgomery) are from Barry county.  For the last several years I have been working on my genealogy, mainly via computer.  I have come against a brick wall in tracing my great grandfather William Harrison Hayes and his wife Mary F ?.  I know they lived in Barry county (1880 census) for over twenty years and Mary F ? is buried in the Concord cemetery.  Would you be interested in helping me with this problem?  What are you fees?  If you are interested, I can e-mail the info I have. >  >Thank You >Sandy Evans >Lincoln, California > >

    3. List readers, our featured photo for the week is one that Tony Martin submitted of his grandfather, Otis F. Nelson. Thanks, Tony for the nice photo and for sharing with us. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/oddsnends/bryfams.htm We have about 200 users on Face Book on the Barry County GenWeb group. These users are a much younger crowd than what we have on the list mail, and a lot of them I have not seen their names on genealogy pages before. I don't know if they are just getting into genealogy or if they are curiosity seekers. Yesterday, discussions of the Ellis family and how the Washburn group is related to the group in the north part of county was what the talk was about, along with several other groups of families and photos posted. We are new on the web but 135 photos have been posted to the group. If you are part of the Roots Web list mail group - or on Face Book on the Barry County list for the GenWeb site - and want to be on the Barry County MOGenWeb group on Face Book - just let me know. Confusing? Yes. My good luck is holding - so far - on the Simpson family research and I have made contact with another descendant of America Melinda Simpson. She has a photo of her that I am waiting anxiously to see. I have waited 47 years for this moment so I can wait another day or two, I think. Another relative made the trip to Watson Cemetery in Pettygrew, Madison Co., AR, to take a photo of her mother's stone, that of Louisa Bristow Simpson Reed Allred. That one I have in my hot little hand and am trilled too that not only he but the other party has a photo of Louisa. America Melinda Simpson married or was connected to George Simpson in or about 1875, then in 1880 to John Wilkerson and then in 1886 to Elijah Poe Bailey. She died in 1910, I think. I do not have birth or death dates for her or know for sure where she is buried. I am guessing Hontubby Cemetery in Le Flore Co., OK, but am not sure. I don't have all the names of her children yet but am still hoping that someday we can figure that out, too. The moral to this story is if you wait long enough and don't give up that usually you will find the answers to the questions that you have. The problem is that I don't have another 50 years to wait so I am getting impatient. I have sheet rock mud to do today on a room that we refurbished from the old part of the house project. We almost have in the new part the electrical done and are working on the plumbing. We are trying to beat the clock so we can move back in before cold weather. Phyllis Long is working on cemeteries, helping out as a volunteer. She added a lot of new information to Mt. Pleasant and is presently working on those pages. She has carpal tunnel and can't do but a little at a time, however, she's getting there and her help is much appreciated! Have a good Sunday. Donna Cooper
