Hi All: I remember picking strawberries for George Craft. Our whole family went and picked for him. it seems to me there were alot of strawberries up around Butterfield and perhaps Purdy. If I remember correctly they were brought to Cassville and put in train cars and shipped to Exeter on the short railroad between Cassville and Exeter. Also during World War II blackberry picking was big business. It seems to me a man by the name of Hilburn bought blackberries in Cassville. The govement wanted all the food they could get to feed the soldiers. I remember my Dad, Mother, my brother and I would go out and pick blackberries in the morning. Then take them to Cassville and sell them to Mr. Hilburn. We picked on 3 farms 6 days a week while black berries were ripe. That was the first real money that I made. My Dad saved some of his money and put electricity in our house. This was the time that Rural Electricity came into rural areas. As I look back on the time, I think God was in it all. Before the war there were few blackberries. Then after the war The sources of blackberries dried up. One could find a few here and there. I don't know if this interesting to anyone or not. Jack Tucker Roulx@aol.com wrote: In the 40's, strawberry picking was as much a teenager's summer job as fast food places are now. I remember picking at least one summer, and my little brother did too, later on. I can't remember where the fields were that we went to. Thanks to everyone for all this information about strawberries. It's one of the few things that I know about Grandma's relatives in Barry County. This would have been between 1910-1920. I always assumed that she was harvesting on the family farm, but maybe she was going down there to work and earn a little pin money. Her father worked for the railroad, so she could ride for free from St. Louis to Pierce City and/or Monett. Both towns were mentioned in the stories she told. Thanks. The reason I ask is that my husband's grandma used to go to Barry County from St. Louis every year to help her family harvest strawberries. Just wondered if they made jelly and jam, too. Interesting photo. I appreciate all the photos that everyone shares. Even if it's not of a relative of mine, I love looking at old pictures. This photo caused me to wonder whether anyone knows anything about another industry in Barry Co. in the "old days." Several relatives said in census records that they worked in the lime works. Can anybody fill me in on this? Was that a big industry in that area? Was it quarrying for chat? Or for cement? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks. List Readers: I just thought that I would let you know that work continues on Monett - IOOF. Believe it or not - am making progress. I have well over a thousand photos posted from Jay's submission and so we have about 1500 photos on the Monett pages now. This is like a very large jig saw puzzle. It has so many little pieces to make it complete. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/monett/monett.htm Today and yesterday I was circling the grocery store isles lurking around all the food in a specious manner. And as I shopped for turkey day fixings, I whizzed up and down the isles rushing here and there like a lunatic. I was like a buzzard looking for a safe place to land as I drove in the garage with my loot. When I opened the trunk to unload all that stuff, I caught a glimpse of my cemetery bucket with all my tools in it. I stood there for one long moment and dreamed a little bit. About this time of the year - I always think of things that I am thankful for. Today - it was that I enjoy going to the cemetery more than I like grocery shopping. [smile] Donna Cooper

Good Afternoon: Today I have some new photos for you. Our thanks to Linda Stephens McCormick and Alice Allen for these very nice additions. So much history is added with photos like these that Alice and Linda have submitted. Some of these are old post cards. I've noticed in the antique shops that they have boxes and boxes of post cards just waiting for someone to find them. I've bought a few of them myself, but I don't seem to have the time to get out and look for them. Linda sent these below: In Focus on Cassville - Under People and Places http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/Cassville/index.htm 1936 Ash Cave on Flat Creek. This wonderful old photo has 2 old cars parked there at the cave. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/Cassville/1936.ash.cave.htm 1924 Cassville - East side of the square. I wonder what kind of a car that is that is parked in front of the store building on the right. Whatever it is - it must have been something to see it coming down the road. This is a real treasure. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/Cassville/1924.cassville.htm And there is one of an oxen team - but we aren't sure that this was taken in Cassville. There is a building with a sign for Metcalf General Store. I posted this one hoping some of you can help us with it. It has a post mark of Cassville, MO, 1908. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/Cassville/1908.oxen.htm In Focus on Eagle Rock - from Linda - http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/EagleRock/index.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/EagleRock/1940s.eaglerock.htm And then there is one for the Eagle Rock Store that was taken in the 1940's. This one is filed on that page under businesses. In Focus on Pioneer - from Alice http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/pioneer/index.htm There is a wonderful old photo of a tomato canning factory group photo. There wasn't a date on it but it looks like possibly in the 1930's or 1940's If you don't see faces in this one that you recognize I will be surprise. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/pioneer/canning.factory.htm Pioneer Home with 3 girls on the porch. Place is unknown and it looks like around the turn of the century but there is no date on it either. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/pioneer/pioneer.home.2.htm And then there is another one of an unknown home, too. If you know who lived in these homes, please let us know. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/pioneer/pioneer.home.3.htm There is one that is probably of the Effie Hutchens home. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/pioneer/pioneer.home.1.htm And then there is one of the Pioneer Band in Purdy, about 1919. I bet some of you will see faces that you recognize - if so please let us know. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/pioneer/1919.pioneer.band.htm In School Book 2 - and also from Alice were a couple of school photos. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/schoolbook/schoolbook2.htm There is a 1947 School photo, which includes Alice's husband, Forest Allen. His teacher's photo was also included. Orin McMillon taught in Pioneer that year. Take a look at the cute little girls with their hair braided. I wonder who they are. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/schoolbook/schools/1947.pioneer.htm Linda and Alice, thanks so much for these great old photos. You have really enriched our web site with these wonderful old photos. Donna Cooper
Clear Creek is a creek that runs through Pierce City. There may have been other, very old, churches or family cemetery's near it? I have members of the Higgs family who were supposed to be buried near Clear Creek in the early 1850's, old Mt. Pleasant, our first County seat, about 1 mile west of present day Pierce City. I have never been able to find them. I think it is now Lawrence or Newton county. Forgot to say that his full name was Augustin Weaver Yoachum. He was the son of Geprge W. Yoachum and Elizabeth Hopper of Stone Co. MO. Thanks so much! In Newton, well, I guess that is probably why I was scratching my head and had that puzzled look on my face! Good Afternoon: Today I have a very neat story for you that Betty Lamberson sent us earlier today. I posted it on the Pioneer page. If you have anything that you can add to our new page, please drop me a line. My address is at the bottom of the message. We could use some more Pioneer school photos and some town shots, if you have any to share with us. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/pioneer/index.htm Jay Trace went out yesterday and did a few retakes at IOOF. In among them was a temporary marker for a new grave, Albert Rice. Some one was asking about him a few days ago, I think. Work continues on the posting of stones. I have over 1400 photos on the web - counting the ones we had from other projects so that is about 1/4 of the cemetery but I still don't have 1/4 of Jay's work posted. I think that I now have over 900 from his file done. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/monett/monett.htm Linda Stephens McCormick sent us a very neat old post card of the Curry Store in Eagle Rock. I've been there many times and can remember it just as this card portrays it. I bet there are some of you who have the same memory. Take a look at that old car parked there in front. Can't you just see it flying down the road like a boat with wings? Oh, yes, those were the days! Noel and Jean (Ball) Curry always come to mind when I think of the Curry family and Eagle Rock. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/EagleRock/index.htm A big thanks to Linda, Jay and Betty for today's new items and for their continued help and support. It is folks like you who make our web site one of the best! Donna Cooper
