Dear List: I know I have been told the difference before but I need to hear it again-what is the difference between a headstone and a tombstone. Thanks. Frances
Good Afternoon: Today we have several new cemetery stone photos and some new notes for our cemeteries. Our thanks to the Lambersons for the Rocky Comfort stone photos that they sent us. Betty and Ralph Lamberson added photos for Tichenor and Decocq. I added the Wood names - Robert Henry Harrison Wood and his wife Martha J. (Plumlee) Wood, the parents of Eva Wood, first wife of Samuel Sanders Haddock. That information was taken from the death certificates. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/rockycomfort/rockycomfort1.htm And our thanks to Ron Henson who added several new photos for Oak Hill. He said that the Barry County web site was what inspired the Choctaw Co., OK site. I think that he said that he is the coordinator there. He was here visiting Thanksgiven and sent several photos for us. There were 2 for Edens, 3 for Henson, 1 for Robertson, 4 Roden and 1 for Nelson. Jay McCandless added a Sills entry and note for Oakhill. And thanks to Phyllis Long who added thses names from obits to Oak Hill. Newell, Morrow, Long, Brock, Hoover and Vaughn. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/oakhill/oakhill.htm Donna Cooper

Good Afternoon: We have a lot of new photos today. I will list them in groups - but there are about 40 or more new ones on the site. On the Rock Springs page there is a link to the Harbin House - on that page there were two new photos of the Gowen house. One of them Maggie Gowen is sitting on the front page. We have Paul Rutherford to thank for those new additions. A few days ago he added the Smithey photo and I now have it linked to this page, too. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/rocksprings/harbin.htm On Rocky Comfort Cemetery pages, Renee Schaffer added a note on the Davidson name. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/rockycomfort/rockycomfort.htm Mike Bounous added 7 very nice new photos - they were for Avondet and Bounous and had Lauteret and Avondet connections. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/photos/photoalbum2/phs2.1.htm I added a Monett School photo - no date and no names. I found it in my box of photos and it has Monett written on the back, but the building doesn't look like a Monett School building so I don't know about this one. The photo is dark and in poor condition but can still be viewed. I hope some of you can help with the identifications and with the building location. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/schoolbook/monett.nodate.htm I added about 32 new ones that had these names connected - Russell, Carlin, Farmer, Lansdown, Harris, Bolton, Carroll, Long, Smith, Haddock and Addington. There could be others, too, so you might want to cruise down through the listings for names that you are interested in. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/photos/photoalbum2/phs2.1.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/photos/photoalbum2/phs2.2.htm Day after day I post phots for the web page and don't see anything that pertains to my people. So - I never dreamed that when I posted the canning factory photo at Pioneer that some of my own family was pictured. I did see some faces that I thought I'd seen before and so I studied it with great intent - knowning that there was something more to this story. So on day of our Thanksgiving dinner I asked an older member of the family to take a look at the photo. You can guess the rest! The phone lines and Internet pathways have busy with talk about who is in this photo and for the last several days now I have heard from relatives all around the country. We are working on firming up some of the details and so as that story progresses I will keep you tuned in. In short - I hit the photo lottery on this submission and I am thrilled! My personal thanks to Alice Allen who shared it with us. I have made some notes on the page. I have listed "probably" and "maybe" as I wait for confirmations from several of the descendants. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/pioneer/canning.factory.htm A big thanks to all who helped with today's new items. Good Morning: Our featured photo for this coming week is the Pioneer Band in Purdy, MO. Our thanks to Alice Allen who submitted it. She doesn't know who is pictured so if any of you have an idea about who some of these folks might be, please let us know. This is a very nice old photo and we appreciate Alice sharing this slice of history with us. You can enjoy it at the link given below. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/oddsnends/bryfams.htm Donna Cooper
Good Evening: I am full of turkey and pumpkin pie because we had our thanksgiving dinner today. I have a lot of new things to tell you about and want to do so before the list gets any bigger. Since several people have sent things for me to post so I will be posting more in the next few days. Here is the list --- Rocky Comfort Cemetery - Ruth Kent sent some new notes on the Davidson and Duncan families for Rocky Comfort. Ralph and Betty Lamberson sent about 30 new photo for Rocky and I have all of them posted. Those photos were for Lamberson, Lewis and Cavanaugh. Also there were several new obits and items that were added to Rocky. The names of Proctor, Norman, Prewitt, Lee and Ellis were updated or added. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/rockycomfort/rockycomfort.htm Truelove Cemetery - Beverly Matthews added notes for Truelove for the Paul surname - and one for Paul was a new entry - one didn't have a stone. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/truelove/truelove.htm Chitwood Cemetery - Ruth Kent added notes at Chitwood for a Roberts listing. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/chitwood/chitwood.htm St. John's Cemetery - Jay Trace added two new stone photos for St. John's - for Margaret Schad and Richard Burasco. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/stjohns/stjohns.htm Sparks Cemetery - Phyllis Long added new notes for Marjorie (Catron) Pennel and Rondal Gene Williamson. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/sparks/sparks.htm Leann Cemetery - Jay Trace added Elbert Thomas and Thomas Calvin Zinn. ------------ On the Canning Factory Photo - an older member of the Haddock family added this information. The date is probably about 1923 or so when the photo was taken. Here is who she thought might be pictured - The 3rd man from the left standing in between a man sitting on a crate and a woman who is holding a child, might be Claude Haddock, born 1897, the woman, possibly Pearl, and the child, might be Ottis D. who was born Jan. 10, 1923. The man sitting with both hands on his legs, next to a man holding his hat by the tree in front, is probably Samuel Sanders Haddock. The man holding his hat could possibly be Virgil Haddock, born 1899, son of Sam and Eva (Woods) Haddock. The woman to the left and right behind Sam is likely Gertie (Addington) Haddock, Sam's second wife. The man with his arms folded right behind the tree and to the right with overalls and white shirt is probably Lawrence Haddock, born 1903, son of Sam and his first wife Eva (Woods) Haddock. The little girl is to the right of the older gray headed man with overalls on is probably Della Haddock, born Nov. 1909, daughter of Gertie Addington. She is on the second row and the fifth from the right side. Sam and Gertie married in July 23, 1911. The little boy in the front with overalls on and his hands on his knee might be Homer Haddock, who was born Sept. 1912 and was a son of Sam and Gertie Haddock. He looks to be about 8 or 10 years old in this photo. If anyone can help identify of these people or add to this or make corrections to this, please let me know. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/pioneer/canning.factory.htm A big thanks to Betty and Ralph Lamberson, Beverly Matthews, Phyllis Long, Jay Trace and Ruth Kent for their help with these new items. List Readers: Today as we count our blessings, enjoy family, football and delicious food we often think back on the days that have gone by. So our suggested topic for discussion on Barry County's Chat list is - "What Grandma cooked on Thanksgiving". Later on you might want log on and read the archives for Chat and see what was posted. Here is link for Chat Archives. http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index?list=mobarry-chat If you are interested in talk about the old days in Barry and all sorts of topics that are or were a part of the history of our county, you will probably find it on the Chat list for Barry. Yesterday there was discussion about making lye soap and earlier in the week a post about poke salad greens, picking up black walnuts and the use of walnuts and then there was a few post on the canning factories of Barry. Other topics have been the Civil War and cemeteries of Barry. You can subscribe to Chat at this link below. http://resources.rootsweb.com/usa/MO/Barry/ Have a wonderful and safe holiday. Donna Cooper
Good Morning: Well, here we are Thanksgiving Eve already. I know a lot of you are elbow deep in pumpkin pies and other things right now as you prepare for a big day tomorrow. We are having our dinner on Saturday so I will be doing the same thing soon. It will be busy with shopping on Black Friday and then my day to cook on Saturday. We are having 15 for dinner so I do have a lot of work to do. We have a lot of new notes for our cemetery pages today, which are from obits and death certificates and very nice entreies. At Horner - Phyllis Long posted an obit that was in the Barry County Advertiser that straighten out a stone entry for us. It was one of those with one date. As it turned out the date was a birth date and not a death date so I am glad to see that cleared up. It was for Letha Dee Brock who was nee Boulton. She died in Sept. 2007 and so this was a recent death. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/horner/horner-index.htm At Arnhart, Phyllis Long and Beverly Matthews added some new death certificate and obit entries. Beverly's were for Giddings and Phyllis added information on Loretta Clayton and dates for Alfred Madison. The dates on the Madison certificate are in conflict with other data that was submitted by a researcher, so all that information was added. Until we see the stone we won't know what it reads. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/arnhart/arnhart.htm Rocky Comfort is in McDonald Co., MO, but we have a few listings on our Barry County pages. Added information was for these names. Collings - Phyllis Long, McGlothlin - Beverly Matthews, Overton - Beverly Matthews, James Barnett - Phyllis Long, Andrew W. Davidson - Death Certificate information - Phyllis Long, Lonzo Davidson - Death Certificate information - Phyllis Long, George Duncan - Death Certificate information - Phyllis Long, Lucy Duncan - Death Certificate information - Phyllis Long, Thomas Hendrix Utter - Death Certificate information - Phyllis Long, And I added new information on the Autry graves. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/rockycomfort/rockycomfort.htm At Washburn Prairie - Phyllis Long and Beverly Matthews were busy with several names. Phillip Tice - Phyllis Long added information from an obit. Thomas Paul - Beverly Matthews added a note - Death Certificate, Maud (Woodruff) Overton - information added by Beverly Matthews, Randall Lee Walker was added information from an obit from the Barry County Advertiser by Phyllis Long. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/washburnprairie/washprairie.htm Thanks so much to Beverly Matthews and Phyllis Long for their help with today's new entries. I will be doing a few days of catch work and then I will go back to work on Monett soon. Most of these new entries above were from our temporary cemetery file. If you have information from a death certificate or obit that you want to add to our pages, please do so on our temporary cemetery page. It is easy to do - and I can copy and paste from it so it cuts down on my work, too. The link to it is below and is posted on the cemetery page. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/rschcemtery.htm Have a good Thanksgiving. Be sure and take care out there and drive safely and, oh yes, don't eat too much turkey. Donna Cooper
List Readers: I have a lot of postings that I will call catchup work for you today. Mineral Springs - Phyllis Long - Cole Name - new material for Lela Coatney. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/mineralsprings/ms.htm Roach - Frances Albert - John Roach - new information and updated data. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/roach/roach.htm Waldensian - Jay Trace added a new photo for Wilma Irene Balmas and also an obit for her was added. She still has a temporary marker. Jay Trace added information on Mann from other sources. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/waldensian/waldensian.htm Horner - Darla Marbut added new informationon Dean LeRoy Hrrold who died in May 2007. Also information and name was added from an obit - Glenn Everett Tucker grave - a recent one in 2007. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/horner/horner-index.htm Munsey - Darla Marbut added information on Hudgins - temp. marker - Obit and photo of marker added. Darla Marbut added a stone photo - a military marker for Bradford which must have been missed on her first submission. Darla Marbut added a photo of the rock by the Edith Priest grave. There is no marker there so Darla added some things so that family could see where she is buried. She also added information about Edith's Gentry connection. Darla also added notes from Georgia Ball Farwell about the Reading unmarked graves there at Munsey. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/munsey/munsey.htm Mt. Pleasant - Jay Trace added new information on Glasscock from a funeral home record. Bevery Matthews added data from a death certificate on McGlothlin. Phyllis Long added data from an obit on the surname of Mitchell. Phyllis Long added information also on Randy Henderson from an obit. Other names that had information or new data added were from obits and were on Thomas and Tucker. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/mtpleasant/mtpleasant.htm Hogeye - Overton notes and a data correction from Beverly Matthews. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/hogeye/hogeye.htm Our thanks to Darla Marbut, Jay Trace, Beverly Matthews, Georgia Ball Farwell, Phyllis Long and Frances Albert for their help on these new items. Hello, I have looked on the cemetery pages and a few say the death cert. is with the secretary of state as my g-grandmothers is and when I when to send for hers I had to show proof I was related and when I asked it why it was in that office I was told for many reasons yet as she was born in the US they really didn't know. Has anyone else come across this? I lived near Gainesville (Ozark Co) from 1955 to 1958. I remember going to Purdy to pick strawberrys when school was out for the summer. It was the first time I got paid for working!!! Other times were for free - cleaning chickens and canning tomatoes and peaches - also corn detasseling. To this day, I will not buy a live chicken!!! When you clean over 200 chickens for freezing (my family sold some of them) in less than 3 days - you get burnt out. We picked blackberries in season and always had a gun and a dog with us to keep the snakes at bay. This is when I learned to shoot accurately - can still fire a gun with ease - and I was a better shot at pheasants than my ex. Nancy (Whittington) Moreland
On the Cargile photo, Phyllis Long sent me some corrections. So you might want to look at that one again. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/photos/photoalbum2/rose.chester.htm Also Frances Albert added a line to the Charles Delmar Walker photo that we already had on the site. She also changed the spelling of his middle name from Delmer to Delmar. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/photos/photoalbum2/walker.chas.htm Donna -------Original Message------- From: mobarry@rootsweb.com Date: Sunday, November 18, 2007 19:34:42 To: mobarry@rootsweb.com Subject: [MOBARRY] New Photos List Readers: I posted a lot of new photos today. Dear List: A few months ago on our site there was mention made of a Centennial Book to be purchased in the amount of $30.00 from the Monett Historical Society. I ordered mine back in September and have not received it, I am wondering if any of you on the list that ordered the book have received yours? Thanks, Frances
